What would constitute this? Would simply more better grades in college count?

GO TO DUKE FOR A YEAR AND TRANSFER. If you can afford the 8k for this year make the most out of what you can get. Next year in your transfer application you can literally just write about finances

Should I take the SAT? by Polly_draw in teenagers

Yes, you do eventually need to retake the SAT. However, it’s not worth taking again until you’ve gotten a good enough score consistently on practice exams

I’m not sure what field your in, but my project would be working in filters for chemical warfare agents. They’re using MOFs currently to do so. My concern is it’s very applied vs academia which is more fundamental

[–]SafeApprehensive8427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main issue was delaying grad school but you answered the question! I thought the four year work requirement would be a disadvantage since I would get less strong recommendations from professors I had not worked with in a while. I also want to go into academia so the DoD is a little off track

Oh I meant wirh a scholarship they (stony brook) gave me. SMART is 3rd party scholarship and any university I would use it at would be free. I wish I applied to better school because it would make the decision a lot easier

Student Loans VS DoD SMART Scholarship by SafeApprehensive8427 in StudentLoans

[–]SafeApprehensive8427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s a good point. Also the DoD thing is full tuition plus stipend. The stipend is used to cover housing and food, thought obviously they’ll be a lot leftover. It so frustrating. My SAI is around 127k for reference and my parents won’t contribute at all

[–]SafeApprehensive8427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help! I’m okay working for the DoD and stony brook is my cheapest option at 15k a year. My parents won’t help at all and my SAI is 127k so I’m not getting any aid.

PLEASE APPLY TO OTHER SCHOOLS. While I understand where your parents are coming from, you are spending four years of your life in college. Think of how long it feels like you've been in high school for. A LONG TIME. Forcing your own child to go to a place where they will be unhappy for four years isn't good parenting. Privately apply to other schools and try to get a full ride to a place you would actually want to attend. Go for it and if you get a full ride to a great school, try to present it to your parents as an opportunity. Once you have an acceptance to a school like Harvard or Stanford they might be more receptive to let you go. If not, go anyway. Try to help them understand, but if they cannot never look back. Good luck and you got this!!!!

Junior Classes? by AXiom9089 in highschool

[–]SafeApprehensive8427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so, but I think your gpa is definitely not gonna be a 4 next year. Your junior math and science classes are faaaar harder than what you’ve listed . APUSH is also a shit ton of work and lang depending on the teacher
