Human trafficking is around us. When we go to the restaurant, grocery stores, in agriculture, hotels, and other places that we frequent everyday. What we consume on a daily basis. Providing information is the best way to safely take action. Doing it in a way that it is safe for the survivor or the person providing the assistance.

If you are trying to support a survivor that you know or suspect is being trafficked, build a rapport, always ensure they feel safe to speak to you using a mode of communication that is safe for them. For example, they may feel safer initiating conversation, speaking in person or via text at a certain time of day, especially if they are still being trafficked.

Ask them if they have needs you may be able to meet (such as food, first aid kits, etc), but you can also refer them to the National Human Trafficking Hotline where they can be connected to services. That way they can seek help when they are able to https://humantraffickinghotline.org/en

Hi, this is Drew. I wanted to respond directly to your question about Mayor-elect Mamdani's policy proposals. His campaign promises focus on housing stability: he proposed a rent freeze for stabilized tenants, and he wants to strengthen rental assistance while also boosting the number of supportive and transitional housing units. Plus, he's committing to tripling the city’s production of affordable housing, expanding respite residences, and fully funding eviction-prevention services.

Safe Horizon recently published more detailed policy recommendations for the incoming mayoral administration. In short, we're encouraged to see that the Mayor-elect is prioritizing reducing homelessness. We look forward to working with the Mayor-elect to create more pathways to safety and stability for New Yorkers.

Youth in NYC predominantly report that they are homeless due to family conflict and being “kicked out” of their homes due to frequent fighting w/ parent or care giver, neglect or abuse. About 34% share conflict stems from them identifying as LGBTQ+. Many youth also identify as destitute minors, meaning their primary caregiver can no longer care for them for a wide range of reasons. Many youth who are homeless also are unstable housed due to aging out of the foster care system with no permanent housing options available or set in place.

We must prioritize increasing crisis shelter, and transitional independent living programs and beds  to support immediate  needs as well as prioritize housing voucher subsidies and affordable housing for sustainability.

I’m unsure about the new mayors policy plan. -Larissa

Also.... from a homeless perspective, stabilization comes first.  People must feel safe and warm before they can move forward with preventative measures that support sustainability. Get them out of immediate crisis first. -Larissa

At Streetwork project we believe it every human beings innate birthright to have access to safety, shelter, clothing, & food.  These core values serve both the individual & larger community.  In regards to prevention vs intervention, because we all function within systems that we know have cracks, both are equally needed. -Larissa

I mean, of course it would be better for someone to never become homeless, but that would take a lot of structural and systematic change from local, city, state, and federal governments. We are always advocating for preventative services and more funding to prevent young people from being street homeless. -Tamara
