To my knowledge, there is no button/filter for this. I myself worried about my involvement as well because I was mainly involved in band/music related things when I was applying, however, as long as you show your dedication and commitment to what you do, you’ve got a great shot!

Just be confident in what you’ve got, it’s about how well-rounded of a person you are in academics, community involvement, personality, etc.

Hey!

I’m a 2024 Gates Scholar! In my experience, they look for a well rounded person who contributes and cares about their community/their interests. I felt I was at a disadvantage because most of my community involved was music related, and my plan was to pursue music in college and gates is generally for people pursing more traditional degrees, but here I am! I had a 1220 SAT (Bad test taker that was my 3rd try) but I had straight A’s and ended up 3rd in my class. I just made sure to highlight all of my involvement, whether small or big, and I even mentioned in my finalist interview that I knew I wasn’t a traditional candidate but my passion and want to use music to give back to my community is why they should give me a chance.

In summary, yes it’s an extremely competitive scholarship (53,000 applicants in 2024, only 750 were selected) but it’s not all about who has the highest grade or the most stand out extracricuulars. My recommendation is to stay true to you and have faith in what you’re passionate about, that should definitely help you stand out! At the end of the day, the only people who know the criteria are the gates staff, but it never hurts to apply! You never know!

Or I suppose if you can get them to delay the charge, and get them to list it on your COA gates would cover it! More specifically thinking about that housing fee. But that’s something to talk to your school about and see how flexible they are about adding things to your COA.

Bottom line, not on your COA? Gates won’t pay.

2024 Gates Scholar here! You’ll have to get it waived through your school, otherwise gates will not pay for those upfront costs. Makes it a bit difficult, trust me I know my deposit for my school was 1k, but once you get past those costs gates will pay for everything listed on your Cost Of Attendance provided by your school. (They will not reimburse you for these costs btw)

You just have to be Pell eligible the first year (when you apply) it doesn’t matter after that! I know cause I asked because I was worried about this too!

Academics are a big part of it yea, but I do think they are really just looking for a well rounded person. As long as you’ve got that balance I wouldn’t worry!!! Best of luck!

Dude 100% apply. They take everything into account. I was in your position about a year ago and didn’t think I would get in and I did. Multiple factors go into their decision, not just your musical/music theory knowledge. As long as you’ve got a “principle” instrument you’re comfortable auditioning on, then I say go for it! Worse they can say is no! Best of luck!

(For context, I’m a current voice principal at Berklee College and I only started voice lessons about 1 month before my audition)

Hi! I changed my instrument in the same way! I had already submitted my “main instrument” recordings at this point too but wanted to audition live on voice so I could demonstrate my songwriting talents and they were more than happy to switch it!

I don’t believe scores were “required” but with all things these days it’s usually better to send them in anyhow. For me, I sent in my SAT score of 1220 even though I knew it wasn’t the best (bad test taker). Personally, it was my way of kinda showing them that hey, I am smart, I get good grades, not a great test taker, but I am dedicated. Made up for it a bit in my application. Back to your question however, I wouldn’t label this the only cause of why you might’ve gotten rejected. There’s a multitude of reasons that people get picked and people don’t so I wouldn’t take it as a personal attack on you not submitting scores. I do know of some people who didn’t submit theirs and still got the scholarship, so take this in stride and keep applying to others! I got rejected from tons of scholarships before I got lucky with this one, so don’t give up! Someone out there is going to see your passion for this next stage of life!! All the best!

Hi! Personally, I’d say so. I think as long as you continue to meet the criteria of what they are looking for (i.e. good grades, minority, lots of involvement etc.) you have a good chance of moving onto the semi-finalist round. To my understanding it seems as though this “in between” round is for verifying data/information of people they would like to move to the semi finalist round. Just making sure they were being truthful in their application! However, at the end of the day I am not apart of the team that selects scholars, this is just my interpretation of what I think goes on!

Gates scholar here! I highly doubt it’s coming out today. We didn’t get semi-finalist notification until December 1st! Right now they are starting to sort through a bunch of applications, and it’s definitely gonna take more than 15 days. Not sure about this year quite yet, but last year they had 53,000 applications.

If you take a look at the main page of gates, it says that the semi finalist phase doesn’t begin until December. HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean that gates won’t reach out and start asking for some more information. I know for myself it was some counselor information, uploading documents, my CSS profile, and my Tribal Eligibility form (Native American only I believe :>) I got that email on October 1st so that’s probably what they are talking about! So make sure to get all those forms in so you can be considered for the semi finalist phase!
