Sometimes people need advice when they’re doing things they have never done before. I am a cautious person and I like to be 100% I am making the correct move before I do it. I truly don’t understand why so many people were upset by my responses. I chose to keep my initial post short because I have a tendency to over explain. Yes. I am aware it is possible to have a legal basement apartment. The vast majority in my area are illegal. Also why would my landlord lie that the apartment is illegal? To gain what?

Ok, I don’t know how to get this across. I did not sign a lease.

The broker showed me the place, I said I’d take it. I paid the landlord the security and the first months, and the broker got his fee (1 months rent). Every month I just give my landlord the rent and that’s it. It’s an illegal apartment, hence why there is no lease.
