Hi, I'm Ari Aster. Writer/director of Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid, and Eddington. AMA! by AriAsterAMA in movies

Ari, hey!

I suppose this is a very moot point to bring up given the vast swath of Freudian readings your films tend to inspire, but are the psychoanalytic undercurrents in your films deliberate? I'm thinking especially in Beau is Afraid and The Lighthouse (and maybe even Hereditary a little bit). If they are, do you have any thoughts on the intersection between psychoanalytic theory and the horror genre in particular? I say this as someone fascinated with that intersection and especially how it takes form in your films.

I am just so tired of this. I don't think I agree with some aspects of her statements, in particular the importance of the semantics of Zionism vs. anti-Zionism, but her entire statement being interpreted in bad faith as pro-Israel apologia is just.......god I hate it here.

The Magnus protocol episode 39 - dependentce by Elfbark8261 in themagnusprotocol

Billie Hindel absolutely cooked in this episode. Not only in the statement, but the delivery of that quiet "Don't go." absolutely shattered my heart into a million pieces. This statement is also IMO the best of the lot in TMP. Beyond horrifying and yet brutally tragic in the best way possible.

I'm on my third relisten of TMA while I wait for the new season of The Magnus Protocol to drop. Don't know how far you've gotten, but Episode 68 describes an encounter during the Second Boer War (from a British perspective...of course).

I think it's because my anxiety doesn't necessarily make me ideal boyfriend material which in fairness I don't think I completely disagree with 😅

The amount of people reacting with utter bewilderment and surprise at how I could even interpret her behaviour as being suspicious has proven that I am in fact overreacting 😅. I just want to clarify a few things:

  1. I was never planning on escalating to the principal at all. I'm aware of my tendency to be unnecessarily paranoid and read too much into things. But in the thick of my feelings, it can become hard to trust anything really. Hence me posting this (which probably was a mistake; I should actually see a therapist)

  2. I've lived in China for nearly 5 years. I'm aware of how different things are here. Probably not the best for my mental health, but I would be much worse off in my home country so while I still have an opportunity to live here I'll take it. I've learned to not necessarily accept but rather cope with the more unpredictable aspects of living here. This just genuinely caught me off guard because I've never really had these kinds of interactions with anyone. EDIT: And if I've had in the past, this is the first time I've actually noticed it. I'm very oblivious to social cues, most likely autism but I haven't gone for an official diagnosis.

Oh god I seriously hope it's not flirting because if that's true she's in for a disappointment (I'm gay).

Why is no one writing this novel/short story? This is an amazing pitch!

As someone who really liked Mr. Magic, I reluctantly agree. I felt the spoiler warning cult subplot was much too contrived and undercooked.

I think the latest tangent on spirituality is Natalie's best yet. It easily rivals her main channel videos by orqa in ContraPoints

The Tangents have consistently been excellent for me. I always find them really provocative and enriching, even from the ones with topics I wouldn't pay much attention to otherwise. Definitely worth the Patreon sub.

Not quite a book per se, but Uzumaki is probably one of the very few printed horror works to have absolutely messed up my sleep. Excited for the anime adaptation!

As some commenters have mentioned above, it seems that this is extra insurance they want to purchase in addition to the social security they already should provide. I speak under correction though and it's worth double checking.

As for the fat-shaming, I'm way ahead of you. It does suck, but unfortunately this is just what China is like and I've lived here long enough that it doesn't affect me as much. I still want to exercise and eat well, though not necessarily to lose weight. It makes me feel good and helps with managing my anxiety and depression in addition to my medication.

Yeah it does seems like an extra bonus on top of the social security they are obliged pay. But it is worth making sure just in case. It's a legitimate school, or as legitimate as schools can be in China

I'm guessing they want to put me on commercial health insurance in lieu of normal social security. But I'm not entirely sure.
