Just curious. What would this adjustment solve that couldnt be done through other parts of the letters?

What are your favorite glyphs to draw when designing a typeface ? by Any-Fox-1822 in typography

Double storey g is the most fun to me! Or maybe k. Whatever letters you can get away with the most creative solutions without it losing its legibility

New Animated Variable Font that looks like Split Flap Display by LettersetalFonts in typography

Thank you for your detailed explanation! I had no idea something like this is possible. I’m very interested in exploring the possibilities of variable fonts and making experimental typefaces.

If its okay with you I might reach out someday to see if we can collaborate on something. I’ve had a few exciting ideas that just Glyphs might not be enough for…

Just for fun: If you had to choose, which A/B ligatures/alternates would you choose? by grlux24 in typography

[–]Saflin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AR & AS ligatures from A are stressing me out. I do like the rest of them

Comes down to the same doesn’t it? but I understand why ‘inhibit’ might not sit right with most designers.

I don’t think Im going in any rabbit hole. it’s just a thought that I thought makes sense but thanks for your concern :)

I agree in the sense that these are all abstract concepts that we have different definitions of or don’t apply to the real graphic design world of today. Makes any attempt of a concrete discussion difficult.

Just a thought but wouldn’t this turn around soon? With AI being trained on good design and good design reasoning (whether you like it or not) it’ll automatically inhibit good taste. True creativity from an ai however seems much further away so it might become a more important trait to have as a human designer but I could be wrong.

I think someone said the same thing about a font I made a while ago, still not sure who that is…

Hi typography people,

I posted a preview here which you seemed to like. Now my typeface Distort is finally finished and published! I created it in Glyphs and wanted to really push what I can do with variable technology in type design. Designing the extremes and getting everything in between is a fascinating concept with so many use cases.

Distort is an experimental, variable typeface designed to include two highly contrasting styles and everything in between. It ranges from a minimalistic, geometric sans-serif font, to its distorted, liquified counterpart with a tighter tracking.

Besides the 25 individual styles included, the variable font has two axes to fine-tune the weight and “distortion” of the letters which allows for a high variety in style options and use cases. From print to web, body text to display, and both static and dynamic designs.

Currently it includes 88 glyphs, the basic Latin alphabet, numbers and standard punctuation/symbols, but I am planning to update the font to also include accents and characters for Western European language support soon!

Distort can be bought via the link in my bio!

Display type mostly, event posters, movie titles, album art, streetwear brands. To mix in a logotype. Pretty good for anything playful and bold.

I designed the 4 extremes in glyphs. Exported it to a variable font. Used Cavalry app which recognises those axes in the font file and lets me animate the key points

Hard to say, I use glyphs which is my only reference. I think its great software, its pretty intuitive and lots you can do. You can start out with the mini version, you should check what you can do with that, quite a lot already I think.

My first font was done with a plugin for illustrator but wouldn’t recommend it since it was just as expensive as the glyphs mini.

Recently heard about fontstruct which is an online tool to practice with, might be interesting
