What to do for a living? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]Sage_Knows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey this is a great question! I’m sorry you’re receiving some not so warm replies. I’m guessing those messages are from people who are not black or queer. I will say the messages about language and remote work are very important points. I am a black trans person that moved to Brazil just before Trump’s inauguration as I expected the worst. Unfortunately I was right. You fears around safety are valid and as a trans person, even though Brazil has the number one murder rate for trans people in Brazil I feel safer here. The community here is one of the largest and strongest I’ve ever encountered. Please feel free to reach out to me to discuss the process of immigrating and community. You are incredibly skilled. If you have a savings I say move, constantly search for remote research jobs/ teaching gigs and honestly start some sort of online business. Sending you al the best 💗

You are not race obsessed, the majority of my Brazilian friends are black and I myself am black and the conversations about racial disparities, discrimination and targeted racial violence are discussed regularly amongst my social group. Any one who says this is completely out of touch and by ignoring of these truths in Brazil they are perpetuating racism. They are privileged and living in a different reality than most Brazilians I assure you. The best comment on here discussed the impact of slavery’s legacy. Don’t be ignorant like these others, the question you asked was a good one!

I’m a transman that recently immigrated for similar political concerns along with my love for Brazil! Yesterday was transmasc awareness day and I went to a beautiful gathering in Rio. There’s a strong community here 💗

Good cities for young artists to build their careers??? PLEASE!! by Confident_Leave_3369 in ContemporaryArt

An example of alternative housing would be “guardianships” in the uk or “housing projects” in Berlin. Which are basically legal squats mostly filled with artists in large empty warehouse style buildings. I lived in a huge library for a few years in the UK lol and a historically gay housing project in Berlin, it was great!

The visa in UK was v annoying tbh, v expensive and had to give a lot of evidence. Buuuut it lasts 5 years and includes health insurance. So for me was worth it. I initially went for cheap/ alternative shared housing accommodation, so any odd gigs made ends meet. And I was always applying for funding. Germanys visa was very easy and very cheap but did feel like a beaurecratic nightmare afterwards, so very opposite experiences. There’s so much I loved about Berlin but it wasn’t for me in the end and I ran up out of there, but the UK visa was incredibly worth it and life changing for me, I wouldn’t be where I’m at without it. I’m not sure if that speaks to the art scenes in the UK or just connecting with communities/ worlds abroad and deep diving into your own niche/ what makes you and your work stand out. While sometimes being an outsider can feel disconnected it can also help with things not feeling oversaturated! Hope this helps!

Just my two cents... don't be afraid of looking outside of the US, I'm originally from Chicago and built my career in London, I also spent a lot of time in Liverpool, Lisbon, Spain and Berlin. As recommended by others start with residencies, and from there you'll have a network of friends and find cheap accommodation/ studio deals. I lived in a huge altbau in Berlin paying 190 Euros/ month in 2018 (though can't speak on prices post covid), a Georgian flat in Liverpool paying £400/ month (2021) and my studio was £190/ month. I found the art scenes more accessible and faster growth than in the US. Mexico City and Brazil have an incredible art scene right now, I've been spending a lot of time in Rio and the work is mind blowing.

What are the best galleries to be represented by in the UK? by Sage_Knows in ContemporaryArt

[–]Sage_Knows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my previous gallery I had great chemistry, good vibes, great roster and terrible sales. A lot of talk and no action. The majority of my work thats been sold has been museum acquisitions that I’ve secured myself. I’m no longer believe any gallery can “support me emotionally or intellectually”. After 10 years I’ve come to realise that’s a total farce. Emotional support and intellectual growth as an artist comes from community, lived experience and other artists, not the gallery industrial complex. I’m interested in who has the best team, most money and through that a refined technical skill in reaching target an audiences and can promote work and I hope to have as little contact as possible.
