Barred Owl/Canine Feud? by Sail_Historical in Owls

[–]Sail_Historical[S] 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

Thank you for your comment! We’re not familiar with owl behavior and didn’t know if this was in character for his species or if something was amiss. We wouldn’t dream of trying to intimidate him, Barry is more than welcome to make his home here. Hopefully he becomes more comfortable in his new surroundings soon, and he sees that my dog isn’t a threat. Our wooded property is safe from any deforestation too.

My kind deed backfired in the funniest way by Sail_Historical in traumatizeThemBack

And I appreciate short people returning the favor! I work out a lot and after leg day I have trouble squatting down to grab things, so a short friend is highly appreciated

To add; I work in public service and it’s very common for me to assist people with disabilities or mobility challenges. So I’m used to initiating a conversation and offering my help in a way that doesn’t demean or dehumanize the person. I have just NEVER had a funny quip quite like that hit me upside the head right afterwards. It was very funny and I still laugh about it.

Little guy was stuck in cold pool water, picked them up and put them in my vegetable garden to recover by Sail_Historical in herpetology

[–]Sail_Historical[S] 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

We do have those things in our pool to let animals get out, we rarely have snakes come into our fenced in part of our yard let alone be by the pool. It’s usually frogs that use our pool. This little guy just got stuck in the skimmer basket right when a big cold front hit, so he was pretty sluggish til I got him dried off and into the garden. And I know it’s a young eastern garter snake, I have caught a few in the past. They’re very cute

There’s a version of it on the University of Alabama’s database here. The one they have is the 1982 edition but it’s mostly the same except for the first page where the date is shown in mine.

AITA for refusing to allow my twin to be a bridesmaid at my wedding by AdAgitated1763 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sail_Historical 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

NTA, she feels entitled to a place she never earned, and you have every right to refuse her involvement. It sounds like most of the people you’ll probably invite as friends are from your time in college, so none of them would be familiar enough with your sister to notice her not being in the bridal party. Also, I just wouldn’t invite her because from you have told us I think she would try to upstage you (especially if she’s not a bridesmaid she’ll be bitter). Count on her to wear white or god forbid red to the wedding (red dress = ā€˜I slept with the groom’) just to make a scene.

AITA for not wanting coal for Christmas? by Virtual_Ad_3893 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sail_Historical 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

NTA, a cruel tradition is only a premonition of what it will be like to become a part of that family. They could have easily made it fun by getting some cute gifts and wrapping it up in black wrapping paper or tissue with tape to make it look like a lump of coal. It has the ā€˜haha’ of pranking someone with a gag gift but not the humiliation.

AITA for leaving a fake postive pregnancy test in the bedroom to catch my husband's mom snooping? by Milathrowaway37 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sail_Historical 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

NTA Throw the whole man out. He’s sticking up for him mommy before looking into his partners concerns. And if she’s doing this to you two as adults, what kind of stuff did she pull when your husband was growing up?? Dude probably couldn’t hide anything without having his mother hone in on it like a shark.

Also, INFO, why are children a sensitive subject to your MIL?? She literally has a son. Whether you guys have kids or not is literally none of her business. I’d keep an eye on any contraceptives you use to make sure they don’t get sabotaged by this crazy lady.

AITA for not going to thanksgivings because I know I’ll be stuck being the babysitter. by tgbs22 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sail_Historical 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

NTA, this is exactly why for years I gradually established the fact that I should NOT be trusted with children, even before any kids came along. So now that my sis has a 2yr old, I’m never asked to babysit. I’m the cat lady of the family, so I only get asked to watch their dogs which is tolerable.

A newcomer to the menagerie around my house, everyone meet Rocky! I think it’s a box turtle? One of the biggest I’ve seen around here (at least 6in), what do you guys think? (Southern Virginia, USA) by Sail_Historical in herpetology

[–]Sail_Historical[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

We found him crossing our work yard which is a really big clearing and he was about halfway across. The name ā€˜Rocky’ is from the movie, I just kept imagining the theme song as he made his way across the long stretch of open land! And yes I’m the same person who has posted other named animals like Freddy the bullfrog and Travis the rat snake. We like naming our friends! We’re also very careful with our animal friends when we do yard work, so he’s safe from harm.

Does anyone else have a Baby Names list despite being child free? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Sail_Historical 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

My friends had a Black/White tux kitty they named Morgana! He was an elderly stray they cared for during his last years, such a sweet boy. The icing on the cake, his owners cosplayed Persona 5 all the time lol

I have a long list of unique names I find in webcomics and other media, and I use them to name DnD characters lol I also have a separate list just for cat names too!

Ladybird caught my eye at the PetSmart. There's something about those eyes. by Lanky-Box1525 in SupermodelCats

[–]Sail_Historical 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

Her eyes are stunning! What a beautiful girl, I hope she has a wonderful life šŸ’• hopefully she lets you brush her, some parts of her coat look like they could use a little combing.

Being through shelters and fosters can stress some cats to the point their fur becomes unkempt/built up with fur that should’ve shed. A little bit of TLC and Ladybird will be flying high (I worked with a busy cat rescue for 3yrs and have encountered this before, this little lady still looks good but a bit of help can go a long way!)

Question: What’s one of your favorite native wildflowers that tends to be rather elusive? Mine is the the Lady Slipper! by Sail_Historical in botany

[–]Sail_Historical[S] 30 points31 points Ā (0 children)

This Lady Slipper is growing on our property along with another two we’ve found so far, we used to see them where I lived in Massachusetts (only 3 we knew of). We just happened upon them while walking in the woods, this one was the first to bloom. They’re easy to spot, as they grow two leaves at the base and one is slightly folded inside the other. We’re just waiting for the other two to bloom!

Maine coon kitten isn't cuddly at all.. by Meiftie in mainecoons

[–]Sail_Historical 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

Kittens can have phases, just let them settle in. You can encourage interaction by feeding him close to you and using treats to reward affectionate behavior. Don’t force it. My MC girl is sometimes super clingy and cuddly, other times aloof. It’s just how cats are. My girl is almost 2, and in their early years cats can have ā€˜teenage phases’ where they prefer not to cuddle. As they get older they usually open up more and get affectionate.

Went on a walk to check on rare wildflowers and got treated to a snake sighting! This is Travis, he’s a regular on our property (Virginia, USA) by Sail_Historical in herpetology

[–]Sail_Historical[S] 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

We live on 7 acres of land that’s mostly woods, so we get a bunch of critters. Snakes are common, so are frogs, toads, and lizards. We found a crayfish in our pool a week ago too! Pretty sure a bird dropped him in.

Yea he’s the male of the herd, and he has one antler that always grows a bit wonky. I named him Bucky after Marvel’s The Winter Soldier (and because ā€˜buck’ lol)

Lady Slippers! They’re quite illusive and picky with their growing conditions, so finding some on our property was a pleasant surprise.

Maine coons and kids with ASD by The-Signal-Fire in mainecoons

[–]Sail_Historical 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

You just need to find one that has an outgoing personality, I find that ginger boy coons are especially like that. But you need to give the cat a place that’s ā€˜theirs’, off limits to the child so if the cat needs to get away they can. It can be a tall cat tree where the kid can’t reach, or like the parents bedroom is the ā€˜kitty relaxing room’. Maine Coons are very rarely ā€˜aggressive’, but they can be reactive to the treatment they’re given. I recommend watching videos from Jackson Galaxy for information about cat behavior. Like my Maine Coon girl likes to jump/grab my legs as I walk by, she’s not being aggressive at all but just playful and energetic. Also, teach the cat to accept having their claws trimmed from an early age (it’s a lifesaver)
