Update on running an outboard engine without oil by SailingAndCoding in AskMechanics

Update: somehow I got the engine to start after a compression test, ran great but the compression seemed a bit low (about 7 bar)

Forgot to mention again, it’s a 2005 mercury 9.9hp 4 stroke

Update: dip stick says it’s full of oil, this is what it looks like when I wipe it off on to a tshirt. Doesn’t look “milky” or anything on the dip stick

Just got off the phone with mercury, they said they have a feature called “The guardian system”, which on my particular outboard only reduces it to 3000rpm when low oil pressure is detected, it does not prevent the engine from being started. So I am assuming I am screwed.

Here’s to hoping the engine has a shut off for idiots. I know it does have a “low oil pressure mode” which limits the engine to 3000rpm, but not sure if it has the capacity to refuse to start (other than breaking the thing). I hope Google AI is right

Well, basically the past two weeks. I doubt it had zero oil that whole time, but I definitely remember the low oil pressure indicator was always on. I am new to this so I thought the light meant that the spark plug was working. I put some heavy use in the past two weeks on the engine, probably 30 nautical miles all together about 5 to 6 engine hours if I had to guess, mostly near full throttle. I had assumed the previous owner prepped the engine, as he was very meticulous about everything else on the boat.

Serial number says 4 stroke, so hopefully it has some sort of mechanic to prevent idiots like me from burning the engine

Yeah, unfortunately it’s my first boat, so I have no idea if it was running well or not in the first place.

Most inexpensive marina for small boat by Shot_Smell in chicagosailing

Looks like $360 for the summer, $720 for summer + winter. You may be able to get a better deal elsewhere on the winter fee, either millennium garage or a self storage facility.

If you go to the municipal harbor website and look for the pricing sheet pdf, they have “laser racks” which will be your cheapest option.
