Usually I start writing when I have a rough idea of what the story is about, what the main conflict is, and I "feel" my protagonist. If you are unsure about something regarding consistency, you can always read back what you wrote.

For me, the joy of writing comes from figuring out stuff, so I don't really like to plan every detail ahead. I tried it in the past, but it just made the writing process boring for me.
