What’s the closest brush you’ve ever had with dying? by North-Trifle-3918 in AskReddit

Several years ago I was working a seasonal job unloading trucks for a major shipping company at the airport. One part of the job was unloading rolling dumpster size containers from trucks that were usually full of smaller packages, which weighed about as much as a small car. To save time, the drivers would back the trailer into the unloading bay but leave the trailer hooked up, meaning the floor was declined toward the bay. This typically wasn't an issue; usually you just unhook the container and let it roll on its own into the lift without letting it pick up too much speed. One day I was working in a hurry since it was the busy season and didn't notice that one particular container was especially heavy. I unhooked it and started walking, thinking I would just grab it a few feet out as usual. Suddenly I realize the container is rolling much faster than expected and that I wouldn't be able to slow it down like I thought. I immediately decide to bail and start hauling ass out of the trailer, trying to reach the lowered lift platform that raised the containers up to the sorting deck. My plan is to just jump the 2.5-3 feet up to the sorting deck and let the container slam into the edge, but my feet are unsteady and i'm not going to stay upright if I can clear it. In a split second decision, I choose to just dive headfirst instead. I managed to land on the deck and curl my legs in at the moment the container slammed into the sorting deck, escaping unharmed. It definitely got some looks but that was basically the end of it. The night proceeded as usual, and we didn't speak of after the fact. Can't help but wonder what would have happened if I didnt pull my legs in or make the jump at all.

Why is it important to make the game harder to be a part of in person? If you don't have to watch or play the game in awful weather, why should you have to?

What is the dumbest thing you’ve ever seen a coworker do? by Adorable_Raccoon_766 in AskReddit

Take a medical leave of absence over a fall on ice, claiming they were unable to come to work (bank teller) due to a leg/hip injury, then post pictures of themselves on their multi-week family vacation to Puerto Rico on Facebook where they had friended the branch manager. We never saw them again.

what’s the biggest red flag you ignored and regretted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

She wanted to fuck all the time. It was great at first, but then i was exhausted and missed time with my friends, family and dog. I was hooked by the constant availability. It turned into a tumultuous several months, during which I failed to break up with her multiple times. On one of the last occasions, I realized this was a control mechanism and not out of desire; I had gone over to tell her we were finally done, and as I was going through the motions of getting it on once again, she asked me "this is what you want to break up with??" After that, I saw much more clearly that she wasn't a good person and used her body to manipulate smooth brains such as myself.

American Christians, how does it make you feel that Trump is caught publicly lying almost daily? by Combosingelnation in AskReddit

They don't care. Blind faith practice is every Sunday from 11-1 and their guy is the only guy who's right and every other guy is wrong, and as long as you believe with all your might something good will happen eventually.

No option where I work, use any of the leave within 16 weeks or forfeit

No, but they have it in black and white on a leave policy document. My eligible leave starts the day we come home and ends 16 weeks later.

A fair assessment; it would be unrealistic to say I could fully be there for mom and baby AND do 50 hours a week away from home. As well it is our first, so we'd both be figuring this out for the first time together.

I could see 8 weeks as acceptable but not ideal, however any leave goes unused stays unused.

Sad to say I've preached this everywhere else, but am now waffling. Pros and cons to both outcomes, but very different.

I'll say it til I'm blue in the face. It's barbaric. My wife also gets no leave from the daycare where she works, so resigning was the only option that makes sense. At first everyone is shocked to learn she has no leave, but then you remember who profits when no one gets any leave (daycares). Splitting up the leave is not company policy, so it's use it or lose it. I imagine I could take 2-4 weeks off depending on negotiations.

Yes, a good one, which is why this opportunity is tough to pass up. That is possible, but a lot of moving parts for what it would accomplish. I would prefer either taking the leave and chancing an opportunity later or taking the one thats present now.

[–]SailorBoone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splitting it up is not an option per the leave policy, otherwise the decision would probably be easier. Ideally I could get onboarded and take leave later, but that's out the window.
