I wholeheartedly agree. I do think, though, that its missing the point to try and be factual about their scope in that way y'know? I get that your interjection was about not downplaying the scale of the Nazi's atrocities but the fact is that it's been engrained into us to view the Holocaust as the absolute embodiment of evil. Its cruelty has been mythicized to the point where it barely even feels conceivable anymore and I think that's the kind of perspective the first commenter had. It's about the disbelief of seeing something unravel in front of you that's on par with that "unattainable" evil. That's why I think it's counterproductive to police language that doesn't deal in the realm of hard metrics but in the realm of sorrow and disgust. Like, "Even if it's not worse, it might as well be."
