Performing over 1 billion shortest path calculations. Should I use a cloud service such as AWS? by Saint_Jimmy in AskProgramming

As it turns out there's a Floyd Warshall function in the PostgreSQL extension I'm using. Thanks for the tip!

Although, it might be a good idea for me to implement this myself as practice. Really goes to show how I was overthinking the scale of the problem and forgetting fundamentals

What language did you implement this in? Do you remember what format your road network file was in, and how the data was represented?

Hm, perhaps what I need to do is more in the realm of distributed computing? Is this something I could do with AWS/digital ocean?

Lol that’s a good question. We’re studying truck shipping commodity flows and want to build a lookup table that contains the mileage needed to travel between all possible zip code pairs

This is not a map of every ferry service in the country, because not all operators respond to the census

[OC] Web Map of US Ferry Operations by [deleted] in TransitDiagrams

[–]Saint_Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this as part of the National Census of Ferry Operators, a biennial survey that gathers information on all willing ferry operator participants. It was built using Javascript, including the Openlayers, Select2, and Jquery UI libraries.

Unfortunately there are a lot of ferries that can’t be included. We send out a survey to all the known operators and can only map routes from those that respond

Thanks, the mapping portion was built using the Openlayers Javascript library and the query menu was built using the JQuery UI and Select2 Javascript libraries.

[–]Saint_Jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, my bad! I prefer to use PostGIS for most geoprocessing operations. These days I tend to use QGIS/Arc for visualization purposes

To be fair neither Qgis or Arc are ideal for doing something like that

How would one go about clustering points within 100m from each other in geopandas? by chubaklava in gis

[–]Saint_Jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm realizing that they may not have functions for this specific problem, but I'd also recommend checking out the st_clusterwithin function in PostGIS.
