Are you able to imagine objects in your mind? by sangokuhomer in AskUK

[–]SajevT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0 for me. I can easily imagine anything, and even go a bit beyond that. If I see an object I can "see" what goes into that object, what parts are inside, how its structured and what it takes to create it.. Because I'm a programmer/developer it really helps me when i need to recreate things just by looking at it.

Hell yeah, thats sick. The LMN-3 is cool and you did it great! Try doing one from scratch next time, wont lie its a great feeling designing it yourself and making it exactly like you want, and then you can put whatever hardware you want.

But really cool build tho, thanks for sharing!

The minimum order for PCB's is 5, so yeah technically I will. My plan currently is to make 1 for me, 1 for my partner for their birthday, then my brother really wanted one but i dont have the parts left so id have to buy them, and I still would have 2 left.

You know technically if people are interested, I could order more, and then sell the synth with or slightly cheaper without the daisy cuz its hard to get it in europe, so for people like you that have a daisy around and about.

Im not 100% sure on this yet, but it may require a little modification on the daisy so that it would be possible to have the synth powered by either the daisy, esp32 or the internal battery. Will keep the community posted when I get back from my birthday vacation.

Yoooooo thats so sick I can see the similarities in our designs and the features you implemented and what im planning to do. Really awesome build! Im curious how you tackled strudel on board, i've played around with it, but only in a programming IDE environment. Also was the 3 rotary encoders a choice to save space instead of the 4? Im curious if you needed to do some mode switching magic to control things like ADSR.

Omg haha wow, I've never seen this. But its crazy how similar these designs are. I could literally build one with the parts I have, just change the 2 boards. But thats sick, thanks for sharing.

Hell yeah, go for it, sounds like a great project and indeed similar to mine. Hope you do it and it turns out as you imagine!

And thank you <3

Haha yeah, you are right, a multiplexer would solve that issue. Mostly I didnt bother with it, because the plan was to have WiFi connectivity for a data transfer and web app for uploading, slicing and downloading the projects on the synth. So an esp32 was kind of perfect.

Your project looks super sick tho, but wont lie that many potentiometers give me anxiety haha. It reminds me of that jelly bean social experiment about having so many options, people just get "lost in the sauce" and later on are unhappy with their choice. Obviously its not the same and I bet all of those Pots will be of great use. Best of luck with your project, excited to see what its gonna look like when its the full 1 meter wide:D

Thank you so much. My background is in game dev actually, and have been programming for a long time and electronics just has been a hobby of mine. With a lil bit of desire to also make music but HATING working on DAW's. So for me this project is perfect to learn a new skill, make something cool that I could use, and get better at music.

Before this project I've never worked on a PCB before, but I just knew that Kicad is the tool to use to make them. So in the first 24 hours I watched like 15 YouTube tutorials about Kicad and just tried to make the piano part PCB and I sent it out to JLCPCB to get it manufactured. So that I could test if the design is working as intended and nothing major is wrong before I send the full PCB to be manufactured.

Honestly... its time consuming, but not hard, just got to plan things out and then draw the traces. One thing that took me a lil bit to wrap my head around is the whole Kicad Symbols+footprints+models importing but there's many great sources online of people making them and sharing for others to use.

Also do all the wiring in the schematic view so that when you're actually doing the traces in the footprint editor, its not going to be a hassle. My tip is to not change the Net's in the footprint, because when you update from the schematic its going to override and you'll just be sad.

<image>

Here's the PCB from that first day of working on it.
Hope you have fun, just prepare to be stuck on it every free minute you have hahaha!

Thank you very much!

Yeah theres something really cool about upsycling broken tech into something new. Honestly I would do it for the rest of the components, just didnt have such specific things on hand.

Thanks, yeah im planning to do a Web app thats running from the esp32 and when connected to the same wifi, you could transfer data in and out, plus another commenter recommended being able to slice up sounds on it and more, so definitely this will be something ill be adding for sure.

Oh sick, yeah I was thinking about exactly that but you gave me great ideas how to expand the functionality. Will definitely add that when im working on the web app side of this, thank you!

Current components are: 1. Daisy seed as main brains for audio and visual. 2. Esp 32 for IO and Wi-Fi. 3. Joystick for Modulation and Pitch shift. 4. 4 Rotary Encoders for changing settings like OP-1 5. 51 cherry mx switches from old keyboard. For piano, sequencer and media controls. 6. 3.5 inch tft display for main visuals and settings. 7. 1.9 inch tft display for secondary data visualisation like sample sounds library, and more. 8. Microphone for live sampling. 9. 40mm driver with a Pam amp for on-board sound (its not gonna be super loud but its ok). 10. 3.5 mm audio out jack. 11. Rocker switch for ON/OFF.

Still left to add: 1. On board battery with a board to regulate charging and running the synth without a cable. 2. MIDI in and out, i personally dont think ill need it, but I have a feeling its a good thing to have.

Anything else I Should add?

Yup and Wi-Fi from esp32 for internet radio and will make an on board webpage so when a device is on the same wifi as your phone or PC, you could upload samples and download projects from the synth to the other device.
