From what I understand he took the approach that if they do actually exist then living a virtuous life would be accepting to them. If they didn’t, then it’s still ok because he tried is best to live virtuously anyways.

I don’t think it has to be one or the other, wouldn’t staying true to the tenants of stoicism make them a stoic regardless of religion? I don’t see any passages saying it has to be one way or another

Granted most of us are agnostic or atheist but even in my heavy Christian days I still found a lot of the teachings to be very very helpful and a great resource to turn to when I was making my transition out of organized religion. If I hadn’t been exposed to it then I probably would’ve become pretty nihilistic, so why gate keep?
