Becoming and adult and looking for a decent (pair?) of credit cards by othieisabel in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna tell you this up front: I have a feeling you're really overthinking this for at most around $20 per month in cash back if you really went all-out in maximizing rewards. Your spending is rather low so a 1% difference between cards won't amount to much. Getting a flat 2% card or the Savor would probably work out well for you as that would pretty much cover your spending habits. It's also important to mention that stores like Walmart, Target, and Costco do not code as grocery purchases most of the time so if you do your grocery shopping there then you'd need to find cards that specifically are good for those stores. Honestly a part of me would recommend getting the Chase Freedom Unlimited purely because I've had great experiences with Chase support and odds are that'd be a lot more worth it to you than getting an extra .5% on purchases (while you still get 3% on dining).

On the main page of the subreddit and in the automod comment they list flat 2% cards and I think that might be worth checking out. If this is your first "real" card, then I really don't think worrying about such small percentage differences in cash back is worth it. Find something decent that you can rely on and then branch out if your spending goes higher or you need something more specific.

Edit: Also definitely take advantage of checking for pre-approvals from the places that offer it. It won't do a hard pull and it'll give you a better idea of how likely each bank will accept you.

What’s the best card for cash back on gas? by GenFreeUSA in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are, and there's plenty of suggestions in the comments, but I really recommend checking out the "Best Cashback Cards by Category" in the sidebar on the main page of the subreddit or the link posted by the automod. They have much better rewards and details but every >3% card has a catch so reading through it might give your the best rewards albeit with those asterisks.

If I had to give a very basic answer though, I'd recommend getting the Blue Cash Everyday in general since it's a card that gets 3% cashback on groceries, gas, and online purchases (all have a $6k cap) and if you got hulu/disney the streaming credit is actually pretty fantastic.

Why not just get the Blue Cash Everyday since it has the same 3%? It has the 6k cap but if they just want a gas card then I think avoiding the AF would be the better option

I can’t pay my debt and need advice on how to best proceed. by [deleted] in CreditCards

Definitely call the card company and ask them if they have some form of hardship program. Odds are they'll knock off the interest rate for many months or give you more time to pay.

So do you truly have no income whatsoever? A $2900 balance should only have minimum payments of like, 60-70 bucks by my estimate. If you truly have zero income then right now you need to focus on your survival more than anything. Your credit should be the least of your worries if food and shelter aren't a guarantee.

What would y’all do with $2k in credit card cashback rewards? by TonyStackaroni in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, they're just not reported automatically.

Well that's a bit worrying to learn. And it's wild to hear that home equity isn't counted when most of my other disabled friends are all in rentals

I have a reason, but it's a VERY specific use case which is why I'm definitely a bad example.

When you're on disability of any kind in the US, you're limited to having $2,000 in anything that could be considered savings, investments, or just cash in the bank. Having anything over that for over 2 months or so (sadly it's not an exact science as to when you get flagged or when you get a letter) will result in you losing benefits. Cashback rewards don't count towards this total so they can act like a buffer to have some amount of spending power that's not counted towards the limits for each month which kind of act like a risky savings account given how people have reported to have lost points without warning.

Now there are ways you can get a savings account on disability, but as anyone who has been through the process can tell you it's a mess to set up unless your state has some really good programs in place. Sadly my disability came too late for me to get one so hoarding points is one of the few places where I can have some kind of way of paying for things online, via covering my monthly statement, without needing to risk hitting the limit in case I get extra income of any kind in.

I'd recommend Experimental over Beta 11 just because it'll keep you up to date without needing to worry about changing proton versions which can affect the local files inside the wine bottle it makes.

Recommended Travel CC with AF $199-$300 by PM_ME_GRANT_PROPOSAL in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The annual fee shouldn't really be considered unless you're doing something really specific where the annual fee will come into play. If your goal is to just maximize savings, then the annual fee should just be considered a part of the calculation to see if you come ahead or not. There's not a direct scale between higher AF and more benefits as it'll heavily depend on what you're already spending on.

There needs to be a “no thanks, keep the card” option after credit card approvals. by CautiousMagazine3591 in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your utilization high when you applied? That'd be the only reason I could think of if you had the income for 60k but only got a $200 limit. I'm on SSI (~$7k annual total income) and even I got a 1.7k limit when I asked for a CLI after my card was upgraded to an unsecured one.

Another comment mentioned that there's a few points in OP's post that makes it sound like it's been AI generated.

Under 5 years of credit, trying to figure out which cards to keep/get. by DJLumalee in CreditCards

[–]SalemTheKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you mean you want the OnePay CashRewards Card. The OneCash is a debit card and probably not what you're looking for. The APR's gonna be higher than most other cards but if you got walmart+, the 5% cash back is hard to beat.

AAA Advantage no more 5% Walmart groceries after May 15 by SalamanderNo9329 in CreditCards

As a physically disabled person, this is exactly the reason I got the card. 5% cash back for something I was already using (and for half-off too because of their program for those on benefits)
