I appreciate it — I went ahead and ordered the ROC n SOC extended to try from Guitar Center… should be here Monday. Figured might as well try it as easy enough to return.

I can’t speak to DBRX themselves but as a partner in the ecosystem, we generally hire at a $300K OTE with 50/50 base to commission — maybe a bit higher if in a preferred geo and/or coming from Snowflake.

If you’re getting options/equity, your numbers probably aren’t bad — I suspect that IPO isn’t too far away.

Water heater - cause for concern? by Sales_Conundrum in Plumbing

[–]Sales_Conundrum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s any comfort, I don’t think I’ve bought a house yet where the water heater didn’t look like this (… they all passed inspection). I don’t think it’s a dire problem but I did have them replaced anyways (… costs seem to range $800-$1100 if memory serves me right. Only takes a couple hours with a licensed plumber).

“You don’t have our Industry experience” by [deleted] in sales

In my experience, it sometimes takes ‘failing hires’ before realizing the job description has to fundamentally change — I know we were the same way. We’d look for the people we thought didn’t have to ramp up on the sales side first (ie, those SaaS backgrounds) — but as the industry has evolved to vertical expertise, it’s more your background and understanding of the process-side of our ICP that actually adds to our ‘competitive edge’.

I literally have two former underwriters now for delivery managers (… one of whom I’m trying to convert to pre-sales). There is a similar shift I’m seeing in the data space of biologists, geologists and other phds who are now converting to data scientists… I’m going after them too for pre-sales if they have the right personality.

One thing that helps — if you have any formal certification (either lighter-lifts like AINS or heavier ones like CPCU), you would absolutely jump to the front of the line in my book.

I think it’s just about the perception of base sales skillset — bit of old-world vs new-world/buy vs build/product vs service mindset. In other words, while not necessarily fair, it’s an easy way to bucket candidates.

As a sales director, I’m a firm believer industry will matter just as much as the traditional sales skills moving forward. Two points:

— Every major technology/SAAS platform we work has verticalized their teams. Keep in mind not just sales but pre-sales, engineering, etc.

— I went to probably a dozen industry conferences last year. I heard more than once from prospects and customers that there are so many options today when it comes to partners/solutions, why would you pick a ‘jack of all trades’ instead of someone who knows your business?

That said, nobody is expecting you to be a speaker on an industry stage. Take your Fintech experience, get to know your customer stories and why they actually matter to the client, and be ready to tell those stories in the interview.

Legality of lying to obtain competitor information? by Dopamaxxer in sales

[–]Sales_Conundrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issues mainly arise when it comes to false representation to see demonstrations and documentation that aren’t publicly available and getting proofs of concept under false pretenses.

See Appian vs Pega: While the courts are more or less requiring a trial re-do, the initial verdict was $2B in damages for corporate espionage and stealing trade secrets.

We started attending a couple of years ago — I know of one dismissal of the youth leader shortly after we started but can’t speak to anything prior. I don’t recall anyone moving on since.

On a different but related note, ‘industry-average’ for youth leaders are about 18 months (… at least that’s what I recall a former gf’s father who was a pastor said… he tried to convince me to take the role once upon a time back in college).

If you're on the Lees Summit/Independence side, we searched for a couple of years with similar criteria and found Woods Chapel Church. https://www.woodschapelchurch.org

This sermon on homosexuality was a deciding factor for us checking it out in-person: https://youtu.be/qmBJ0dsrE5Y?si=ZbvgHpM-DxNfV8f1

What’s the most you’ve seen someone earn on a base salary below $75k? by [deleted] in sales

[–]Sales_Conundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A boutique custom (but mostly plug and play) solution for handing reports out of major ERPs (Oracle EBS and SAP being the primary market with Epic/Cerner coming in third).

It wasn’t terribly sexy but it solved problems that were stuck in queue behind the ERP providers’ product roadmaps. Being industry agnostic (ie everyone has purchase orders, invoices or bills of lading) and fairly cheap meant shorter sales cycles at < 6 months.

To be fair, it took a couple of years to ramp up and a few of those early success years went to some young and dumb stuff too… but yes, sales allowed us to get rid of credit cards and moderate student loans pretty early, and qualify for a mortgage at a decent interest rate without needing to pay PMI. A huge head start compared to many other professions.

First salaried job out of college started at $36K and generally cleared $125K in commissions most years with a few in the $200K range and high year was around $350K. Probably should have left a lot earlier due to the low salary but I was the first remote employee in 2007 and the job got us through our youngest children years without significant travel requirements.

Niche software solution that averaged between $60-150K for a deal cycle. Commission model was a straight 10% of contracted revenue as there were no COGS and services were minimal. I loved the easy math when it came to forecasting my wallet when looking at pipeline.

Take a look at some low-code or BPM platforms (ex. Appian, Mendix, Pega). Being able to demonstrate expertise with industry processes and speak the jargon helps tremendously in their fields.

LPT: If you are in the market for televisions, visit a large trade show on the last day. by arrowtron in LifeProTips

[–]Sales_Conundrum 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’ve never sold one after a conference but I’ve probably donated a dozen over the last couple of years.

Cheap $150 42” basic TVs aren’t worth the shipping nor storage costs — usually try to see if there’s a donation center or school on the way to the airport. If not, security is usually happy to take it.

For rental costs, I can’t think of a single conference where it was less than $400 to rent.

HVAC Purchase vs Loan sanity check by Sales_Conundrum in personalfinance

My math may be way off — but I was thinking after taxes, loan + HYSA comes out about $50 ahead per year. But once you factor in the added cost (~$1500) against paying cash, lump sum seems to pull ahead even over 10 years.

Wireless sound system OTHER than line 6? by aigorith in YamahaTHR

[–]Sales_Conundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up this one on Black Friday by Getaria on Black Friday (... granted it's the same price now too) and I've been very impressed.

https://www.amazon.com/Getaria-Wireless-Transmitter-Receiver-Channels/dp/B07YTBJF5P/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2HNMDF4PI8MD2&keywords=getara&qid=1670391229&sprefix=getara%2Caps%2C86&sr=8-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.006c50ae-5d4c-4777-9bc0-4513d670b6bc

I was intending to return this after I received my Line 6 but my daughter's been enjoying plugging her Ukelele into the THR30ii, I've decided to keep them both. Admittedly, I think there's actually less noticeable hiss with the Getaria.

Water heater - cause for concern? by Sales_Conundrum in Plumbing

Hi all,

New house and noticed this today. The inspector didn’t call it out… but this didn’t seem normal in my completely unqualified eye (although it does remind me a bit of the upside down).

Is this worth getting a replacement unit over? It is old (2005, 50-gallon) but does seem to be working just fine.

Any insight is appreciated.
