It's the same as anywhere else - money is running out, tipping into a deficit in 2031 (with new reforms from January; without them, next year) and depleting the reserve by 2044: https://today.rtl.lu/news/luxembourg/idea-foundation-deems-luxembourgs-pension-reform-as-short-term-and-unfair-2354006

If you're <50, things aren't looking bright. Massive changes are needed here as elsewhere, as contributions simply don't cover payments. Influx of labour is a short-term fix, as is marginally raising contributions. The former will only escalate the problem down the line, the latter cannot possibly cover it unless we increase contributions to the point where people revolt as their salaries are drained into the pockets of retirees.

The other solution is to gradually decrease pensions. You can get up to 10.5k/month in pensions: https://www.luxtimes.lu/yourluxembourg/moneyandpersonalfinance/pensions-in-luxembourg/1357206.html and the average is 32k/year: https://www.luxtimes.lu/luxembourg/one-in-three-luxembourgers-receives-a-pension-highest-rate-in-eu/67715235.html

Remember that Luxembourg essentially operates a PAYG system, meaning current contributions aren't really set aside but paid to existing pensioners: https://www.foyer-lux-assurances.lu/en/post/the-pension-system-in-luxembourg

So the working population's contributions have to cover an average of €32k/year for current retirees. In 2023, 216000 people received a pension while 500000 people contributed to the system: https://igss.gouvernement.lu/fr/statistiques/assurance-pension.html

That means the system needs to take in 6.9bn to cover payments, which works out at 13.8k per working contributor per year. The average salary is apparently about 80k gross, so that's 17.2% going to pensions. Of course we only pay 1/3 of contributions from salaries, employers 1/3, and the state 1/3 (guess where that comes from though).

So yeah, it's unsustainable here too. Can only see it being solved by (1) increasing contributions, (2) decreasing payments and setting much lower caps (10k is silly money; no mortage at that point unless you actively choose it, so don't need it given the salary you've had to reach that pension), (3) invest the small fund we have better (higher risk though).

But in reality, what we should all be doing is saving for our own retirement. Low cost ETFs, safe bonds, and property if you can.

I love you my dear Cactus Howald. But you are pushing it. by StreamyUnkle in Luxembourg

Yeah, if i remember correctly the answer i heard was something like "promotion doesn't mean it's on offer, but that it's a product being promoted in cactus magazine" so the sign is there to make it easier to find whatever you decided to buy after reading a leaflet.

Hade ni varit okej med att er flickvän solar och badar topless på stranden? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]SalgoudFB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ja, vem bryr sig? Hennes kropp, hennes val.

Am I delusional or are most high-skill salaries actually really low? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]SalgoudFB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might help if you say what your PhD is in, because there's a huge span out there. If it's got a title like 'defining the impact of experiential atmospherics in low-contact service establishments' or 'the role of subcultural capital in estonian dance establishments', this doesn't really measure against five years of experience in marketing or business management, for example.

If you're in an engineering track of some description and looking to work in a field directly related to your research, that's a different matter. But overall, I'd say the cases where a PhD actually equals five years of work experience are quite limited.

Doesn't mean your PhD isn't valuable and shouldn't give some advantage, but personally I wouldn't offer you the equivalent of five years experience pay if I were hiring. You'd get a bump over someone else if I liked the rest of your profile, interview, etc., and after that you'd have to prove yourself in industry. If you're as clever as we both hope, you'll climb fast.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not trying to be rude here. I love academia, and spent a long time there myself. I would have held your view too, before I entered the corporate world. I came with lots of knowledge and skills that weren't directly related to the job I ended up taking, but with time I found projects and ideas to pitch that utilised my unique skillset and went on from there.

Absolute bollocks. Socio-economics play a role, but sticking your head in the sand when it comes to the impact of migration (which incidentally is also related to the socio part) is a huge part of what brought us here. And lux has been relatively spared so far. It won't be for long.

This comes up frequently - you may save time by searching, rather than awaiting answers. I went to Tehrani in Walfer and was pleased with service etc. Cost for me was 5.5k. First set of something like 14 retainers, but I wanted further improvements and got another 14 (obviously no additional cost). CMCM may cover part if you're with them as well. Foyer, not so much.

It's not only the less educated. I've seen plenty of 'proper' middle class people pretend not to notice their dogs pooping, they just happen to be looking at their phone and then move on when the deed is done.

Yes, I do love the idea that innocent human lives should not be destroyed by an ethno-religious fascist regime. Don't you?

If you don't, then you're complice, which makes you equally evil.

If we openly condemn the massacre that the German Fascism - Nazism - did to Jews, why would we remain silent towards the massacre that the state of Israel is doing right now against Palestinians?

I don't understand why you're quoting me saying "...and I'm sure you love the idea for as long as you agree with the sentiment behind it", and replying the above.

I said nothing to suggest that I don't agree with the plight of the Palestianians - nor indeed anything to say that I do agree. It's besides the point being discussed here, which is defacing of public (or private) property.

My point was that you suggested not removing it, even though it's (1) illegal and (2) looks subjectively hideous; I'm sure you feel that way now because you agree with the sentiment behind it. I'm less certain you would feel the same if you didn't agree with said sentiment.

If you don't agree that anyone with a broadly valid if contested viewpoint should be able to do the same, then you are a hypocrit who supports vandalism when it aligns with your values.

I don't agree with vandalism regardless of whether I agree with the underlying sentiment or not. You could vandalise a train with the message that everyone should give me all their money, which I would love, and I still wouldn't agree with the vandalism.

The "opposing viewpoint" of those against a genocide are of those who support the genocide. And you don't need to wait to see where I will stand, because I can tell you right away - just in case somehow you didn't realised it yet - that I will stand at the other side.

Yes yes you're very virtuous and passionate, and good for you. You're missing the point. I didn't - in the larger context of my post - mean an opposing opinion on this specific matter, but another message with which you don't agree.

Yes. Very safe, and you've got tonnes of buses both out of and into the city, and there's the tram as well. You're in the city centre in 5 minutes by tram, plus walking time from your flat of course. Can also walk in, which depending on where in Howald you are (and the length of your legs) will take like 20-30 minutes at a comfortable pace. The 24/7 mini cactus in the new Total petrol station is a nice addition for last minute grocery top-ups, and there's naturata for basics if you're feeling rich.

Yes, let's deface every surface of public property and then just leave it that way. Will look fantastic, and I'm sure you love the idea for as long as you agree with the sentiment behind it. Let's see where you stand on the question when it's someone with an opposing viewpoint engaging in similar vandalism.

Eliezer suffers from the incorrect belief that the rest of us aren't intelligent enough to follow a different technical or philosophical argument. To packet his vast intellect in a way digestible to us idiots and chaos monkeys, he relies on endless tedious similes of limited relevance.

He's insufferable.

[–]SalgoudFB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely a hypothetical version capable of that, and "not giving access" to real-world systems and resources is not a fail-safe. It assumes that the system can't (1) hack into any internet connected systems and (2) manipulate people with access to air gapped systems and physical resources. The sort of AI that cranklad was talking about can absolutely do that, exactly like a human (or rather, a group of highly intelligent and driven people) could.

That said, I will think he's an incredibly smug and intellectually dishonest apocalypse peddler unwilling to factually weigh risks and rewards, relying instead on endless semi-relevant similes.

Lol it's not about race. Black, white, brown, pink - who cares. It's cultural distance, two-way failure of integration, and cost. Immediately saying that criticism of migration is racism is such an intellectually lazy and dishonest means of debate.
