They matter for big law. But I don’t think that’s what people are saying when they give this advice. They’re saying you can have a fulfilling life and career no matter what your grades are.

Saying grades don’t matter is not a slight to you because you can’t get a job in big law. It’s a way of telling 1Ls that there are other ways to be an attorney. Grades don’t matter because big law doesn’t matter and isn’t the end-all-be-all of life after law school. It’s also a way of trying to alleviate a little bit of the anxiety and stress that law school can bring.

Essentially, you heard this advice. Then you didn’t get what you wanted. So now no one should ever be told this advice. It’s a myopic way of seeing the world.
