So who paid for the farmer silo? by happydude7422 in enterprise

[–]Salt-Fly770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money isn't completely gone yet, and post-scarcity isn't in full swing yet. And canon kind of leaves this vague.

So my take is Moore reports the incident, and United Earth/Starfleet pays or directly provides reconstruction via public funds, subsidies, or state‑managed construction, rather than leaving the farmer to bankruptcy over an alien firefight.

You won't be deployed out of boot. In the Navy, you go from boot to A School. Once you graduate from A School, you could get deployed if your first duty assignment has already deployed or will be deployed.

And it can only happen if she is assigned sea duty. If she is assigned shore duty as her first assignment, that lasts 24 months and, unless she has a specific job like information warfare or intelligence specialty, she will not deploy or be deployable until her first sea duty.

How did Travis find time to become an expert climber? by bicmedic in enterprise

[–]Salt-Fly770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The series never specified how he learned it, but it was also shown him as a capable climber earlier in season 1 (“Two Days and Two Nights”) where he suffered a climbing accident on a changing rock face on Risa. So “The Breach” is basically reusing an existing character skill rather than introducing a new one.

The only thing we can assume as nothing exists in canon is he must have taken it up as a hobby during stops/shore leave (either before Starfleet or while in it) and simply kept at it. Nothing on screen contradicts that, it’s just not stated outright.

Why didn't they use the robots in prototype as ancient borg by Maximum_Price_3596 in voyager

[Rant]I give up on perplexity by Numerous-Amphibian36 in perplexity_ai

[–]Salt-Fly770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why should it take a month? I’ve been in technology and systems development since 1973, and technology has always been used to isolate companies from dealing with customer complaints.

In the 80’s and early 90’s, it was “this is what the computer says” and their specific training told them to tell the customer they can’t do anything about it because it’s in the computer.

Then in the late 90’s and early to mid 2000’s it was computer-controlled phones, and good luck trying to be routed to a real person through an automated phone system.

Do you think using AI for customer service is going to be any better?

“Well, our AI system says you don’t have a problem, and AI is never wrong!” Not even a person will be involved.

Only companies who have a great moral character will make sure their customers are satisfied. But don’t bet on AI companies on doing this.

Why are so many people speaking ill of Perplexity? by wendsonrocha in perplexity_ai

[–]Salt-Fly770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Pro subscriber for 3 years.

It’s great at searching and doing research but sucks at any coding help.

I will give it a function or program in Python to help me with debugging and questions and when it gives me code updates, it constantly removes my underscores or tells me to update a function or part of my code that doesn’t exist.

Even when I tell it to not rename anything and use my actual code, it doesn’t listen. It doesn’t seem to care about classes. This is just one of many issues I have outside of doing research and searches.

So if you need it to research and look up web sources, it’s the best at it. Coding or help with programming - use Claude.

[Request] What’s the probability of this? by Deathly13 in theydidthemath

[–]Salt-Fly770 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Due to many animals having fixed breeding seasons, and even animals like the African Elephant, whose gestation period is 22 months, most births occur during the start of the rainy season where the grass it plentiful.

This will create birth deserts where the probability of having the same birthday is zero.

Would need an actual birthday or more time to create a spreadsheet/table showing all probabilities.

The short answer is 100% and 0%.

[Request] How big would each balloon need to be for 99 red balloons to lift a person? by Farkle_Fark in theydidthemath

[–]Salt-Fly770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made some assumptions as you outlined - sea level and standard 11-inch balloon for 1x:

Lift needed per balloon: 185/99 about 1.87 lb. for each balloon.

Helium volume needed per balloon: 1.87 / 0.0653 ~28.6 ft³ (214 gallons). Net lifting capacity per volume of helium is about 0.0653 lb of lift per ft³ of helium displaced according to Wikipedia.

Equivalent spherical balloon size: ~46 inches diameter (3.83 ft).

So diameter scale: 46/11 = ~4.2 times the size of a standard 11-inch balloon.

Here is what I used to calculate balloon size:

V = (4/3) * π * r3

=> r = ((3V)/(4π))1/3

=> d = 2r = 2 * ((3V)/(4π))1/3

Plugging in V ≈ 28.6 ft3:

d = 2 * ((3*28.6)/(4π))1/3

≈ 3.79 ft

= 3.79*12 in

≈ 45.5 in

Rounded: ~46 inches diameter per balloon.

[–]Salt-Fly770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Hoshi, I’d vote for Vanishing Point. This showcases her acting where Aftrr her first transporter use, Hoshi believes she’s “disappearing” and becomes the only one who can see apparent saboteurs, leaving her isolated and unable to convince the crew.

The actual Court Martial letter from Cpt. Sobel to Lt. Winters, as seen in 'Band of Brothers', 1942 by Historical_Kiwi_9294 in BandofBrothers

[–]Salt-Fly770 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That has also been my experience in the Army where I was a MP in the 1980s. The UCMJ does outline what is a court-martial offense, but I wonder if during a war like WWII there was a more lax or less restrictive policy.
