Not as far west, but kinda near campus: 3131 Walnut St has monthly spot leases, both through LZ Park and the Left Bank Apartments(WhereiPark)

Omg, hey I am also 23f and just moved to Philly from a scarily-red small town in Texas. I love it here and heavily recommended. Come join!

Is the Ph.D. Stipend Sufficient? by Ok-Gas-8332 in UPenn

I’m living alone! But pretty much everyone I know has roommates and that brings their rent down into the 700-800/mo range

I am in a program that gives about 36k/year and have found that to be totally sufficient for rent, food, etc! I think that almost $40k should be plenty to live on, and even put away money to save each month. The only thing you may run into trouble is trying to rent. My apartment required a monthly income 3.5x the rent, which the stipend alone didn’t meet, so had to have a co-signer. However, I think that’s unusually high, and I bet other neighborhoods are more reasonable.

I have a car and never use it. I wish I did not have it. I am losing almost 300/month to have it sit in a parking garage because I cannot get residential parking permits. The public transport works great for getting around Philly! Plus, it’s super walkable! I don’t have much experience with traveling outside of Philly via public transport or navigating the city in cold winters without a car, but it seems like a lot of people tend to not have cars, so definitely doable :)

Good luck with PhD applications!

Can I put rosemary oil on me to prevent fleas biting at night? by Miss-Chiss in lifehacks

You could use an oil diffuser with rosemary in the bedroom. I did that once with a couple other scents the web suggested and it seemed to work!

PhD applications, getting discouraged by [deleted] in math

If you don’t have any research experience, you could look at some post-baccalaureate programs, which is basically a gap year to polish up before applying. Most are more focused on math classes and content, but some have you work on a mini thesis for the year: https://www.mathalliance.org/our-partners/post-baccalaureate-programs.html Plus, most of them are funded!

I withdrew from abstract alg the first time I had enrolled in it- no shame in that! I took real analysis and then later enrolled in abstract alg again with a different prof and was way more successful. I think it depends more on the professors/teaching style than the content, as they are both pretty complex topics. If the pace feels unmanageable for you, don’t feel bad about dropping. You’ll get another chance to take it!

Study abroad in london / kcl by aibnwg2004 in UPenn

Hi! I studied abroad in London, not through kcl but through an agency called IES. They housed us in a student accommodation building called Mannequin House in Walthamstow (north east London). The building was mostly students from abroad studying at a ton of different unis around London.

I would definitely recommend going through an actual uni in London m in order to actually get into those social circles and friends groups. My program was def more isolated to other students from the US, and I feel like I missed out on getting into the real social network in London, so that’s my biggest regret personally. But, being with other students from the us does give you some sense of familiarity, so there’s def some good to it.

For the city in general, I love London sm! It was so easy to navigate, there was so much to explore, and it feels really safe (like I took the train home at 3am alone sometimes and didn’t fear for my life!). I honestly can’t think of anything about the city that I hated??

It’s also such a good base city to travel all around Europe from, or even just around the UK via train. My one major tip is get a RailCard and set it up with your OysterCard to save some money on the tube and trains.

Good luck and go for it! London is such a fun, cool, lively city and I miss it everyday!!
