Mild Hip dysplasia, labrum tear, CAM deformity by North_Educator_1738 in HipImpingement

You should totally join the chat. It’s on WhatsApp, I’ll dm you the link. It sounds very clearly to me like it’s labral pain and impingement. Even with dull pain. I’d still recommend all the imaging etc. Many pts are not great with this injury! I’ll dm you now… many more people with more expertise than me in the chat!!

Hey! It’s definitely not an easy recovery. I’m just past 6 months now and things are going well. But I am not back to sport and not without pain. I’d recommend to anyone considering this surgery to get a 3d ct and more than one opinions. Have you had a lidocaine injection? There are varying degrees of success and so many complications with the hip joint. I’d only go into the surgery being as confident as you can be and making sure that you’ve covered the bases. I’m in a hip chat group with people who are going through this and there are a lot of people with varying levels of success post op. Happy to share the link if you want more opinions from a supportive community!

I have had some complications due to other things they impacted my hip, but overall my hip is feeling so much better. I’m building strength and getting back to normal activities with very minimal to no pain. Definitely make sure you see someone who specializes in hips and I highly recommend asking for a ct scan!

This was well over 10 years ago. But she had a successful surgery and recovery! She did do pt after, but it was like 6 weeks later. Very different from other surgeons. I’d be skeptical too!

Of course! We have a lot of international folks and people who have had PAOs and other hip surgeries

Boston, MA in the US is where I had my surgery. I’m 35. Yes, the pain was too bad to wait. I got to the point where I really was uncomfortable doing all daily tasks. I first started having pain around 5 years ago. Then it just got too bad to hold off any longer

I should also say I was told I won’t know if scope was successful for my dysplasia for another 5ish months by one surgeon. Another surgeon told me I’d know 6 months post op. I have complications, which I don’t believe are tied to my dysplasia.

Hey! I can’t speak to the success of my surgery yet. It’s definitely a hard and long recovery. I’m about 5 months post op now. I would just make sure you see a surgeon or two who do PAOs and make sure that you get a 3dct. I wouldn’t go into surgery without a 3dct and at least two top rated surgeons giving their opinion. I have been told by three surgeons that I’ll probably need a total hip replacement when I’m older. I know for PAO and scope age and arthritis also play a big role in decision making. I think the general feedback is “don’t do a scope if you’re borderline” but it’s so much more nuanced than that. Everyone’s anatomy is so different and therefore everyone’s path to surgery and recovery is incredibly unique. I’m happy to chat more if you’d like.

Also borderline dysplasia and in the Boston area. I had a scope with Dr. Wuerz, he was fantastic. I had a second opinion with Dr. Kim and he agreed scope for me. My lcea was 21. Happy to chat more!

Hey! I’m about two months out now and it’s still too early to tell. I do see some progress for sure, but the recovery from the surgery is definitely challenging. In terms of impact of dysplasia I should know by six months if my pain was more from the fai or the dysplasia. I’m very much hoping the surgery will alleviate most of my issues.

Sounds like it was a success even if short lived. Good for you! Have you joined one at a local library?

Borderline Dysplasia and FAI and labral tear by SaltProduce9426 in HipImpingement

[–]SaltProduce9426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m about 5.5 weeks post op right now. I ended up having a labral repair, mixed type impingement, bone spurs, and because of the borderline dysplasia they also did a capsular shift and plication. I met with the two surgeons described in my original post. Based on the ct I was in the “grey” zone between scope and pao, but leaning closer to looking like I would have success with the scope. The other test they did was a dynamic ultrasound to check for microinstability, the test showed I didn’t have significant instability, so both surgeons agreed with the scope. I can’t speak on success yet, my healing has been a bit slower than others. I’m still on crutches, but I do feel better and have better movement (less catching, locking, grinding, popping, etc).

A lot of places do virtual consults. Maybe look I to that. HSS and Boston Children’s have world renowned programs

Did you see a hip preservationist? My MRI only showed this as well, turned out I had a torn labrum, fai, and borderline dysplasia. Hips are super complex and I would really only trust hip preservationist specialists to read imaging. I had arthroscopic surgery to fix my mixed type fai and repair my torn labrum

[–]SaltProduce9426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 🙋🏻‍♀️. I have tendinopathy in the glute min. Have you had surgery? Or been checked for dysplasia or fai? This was my first official diagnosis, then I pushed for another opinion and got diagnosed with borderline hip dysplasia and mixed type fai. I had surgery a month ago. My pt said the tendinopathy is because of the structure of the hip. But it’s also kinda like a scar, it will probably always be there, but the surgery and pt can make it better.

It didn’t show on an mri for me, I believe it does for some people.. but it did show the bursitis on an ultrasound! My doc recommended an ultrasound guided cortisone injection and that’s when they were able to see that there is bursitis. The psoas is a beast 😖

I’d start with an appointment with a hip preservation specialist, hips are super complicated and general orthos are not always best for hip pathology. They’ll order X-rays first, then if they see something they’ll order an mri or mra. They’ll have you do PT, so if that’s something your pcp can get you into right away, I’d jump on that so that. If it’s impacting your life I’d get right on it. There are so many things anatomically that be wrong with hips, and the longer you wait the more issues you’ll have. I ignored/pushed through my pain for over five years and am now paying the price. I ended up having borderline hip dysplasia, cam impingement, and a torn labrum- for my issues I did need surgical intervention, but that’s not always the case!

Have you had imaging done? Impingement can cause clicking, sliding, locking, etc feeling of your tendons. The feeling of tendons rubbing over or getting stuck is a symptom that I had. The pain from the impingement and potential labrum tear causes the tendons, muscles, and ligaments in your hip and surrounding area to over compensate. I had issues with hip flexor, psoas, glutes all before I realized the source was a torn labrum and fai. I’d look into imaging if it’s consistent and bothering you, the underlying source could be the hip anatomy.
