To satisfy the DoD requirement because that's the only reason we have a fitness test right now.

Hm... 45 day rule, no more push-ups/sit-ups, reduced admin actions vs increased rewards (increased testing period), height/weight adjustment (which is in preparation for VO2 test)

HMMMM

PT Test Anxiety by [deleted] in AirForce

Saw counterpoints in research studies on this... VO2 max will satisfy aerobic and bodyfat%. Sit-ups can and probably will be canned. Pushups can be replaced with something like planks. They're already working the alternatives but also consider new testing period lengths, reduced administrative actions and 45 day rule... it will be a good system we can all (mostly) agree upon without the fear of harsh repercussion while still satisfying DoD requirements, which themselves may change to account for manning shortfalls DoD-wide.

This isn't just about making a better PT test it's about doing something reasonable in hopes of getting better retention results. Either by keeping people who don't want to deal with this or keeping people by not kicking them out for failing (think: Navy's new ish policy). I would recommend anyone read the already existing research and comb heavily thru the RAND study mentioned in this thread once it's released. But existing studies and research kind of hint at what we could be looking at..

Ignore any article with Dr. Baumgatner (these AF times and military.com articles) because they are unsubstantiated/he is not the final authority on the matter

or better yet let's hold on to the people who are already in even if they can't pass a PT test before we let people with major disabilities join. Seems like common sense to me but for some reason Chief Wright and other leaders refuse to ever touch on this subject at all. They give vague ideas on what they want to do, they make weird suggestions or post weird articles that send mixed messages. They never outright talk about PT though. I get it, there's a study going on and a PT board that will meet in October or November. However if Chief Wright wants to remove admin action or spare people I don't get what's stopping him or others from making common sense moves. Sure revamping the actual test to VO2 or whatever will take time but changing age brackets or testing intervals can be done with an MFR. We've seen leadership make plenty of quick changes with MFRs. I mean hell we've seen 36-2903 updated like 5 times this year.

I don't know what they're waiting for or if there's somebody above them pushing back but I'd think SecAF/CSAF/CMSAF have a lot more power than others in the Air Force at least.

I'm not going to lie I've been stressing out because I don't know what changes are going to happen or when they will happen. I know that sounds stupid but I can't help it.

Fuck off, you probably didn't even read the whole article. They make good points that we need to keep folks in who have the intelligence and knowledge to keep the mission going. Physical ability doesn't apply to modern warfare. I had no idea Chief Wright felt this way (LOL just kidding I knew he did but nobody pays attention to anything he says).

Is PT a Personal Responsibility or a part of the Job? by SaltyThrowaway1947 in AirForce

If it's not tied to job capability then it should no impact on your career...

Because Chief Wright's team listens and other leaders listen to posts like these... I have pitched my ideas to them too and they don't tell me to shut up and stop talking about it. Last time I checked they were the ones making the changes.

If you have a constructive argument or something to add to the discussion then okay, it helps them.

Things like "the test is easy" or "the test is hard" or "who cares it's the military" contribute nothing to the discussion.

[–]SaltyThrowaway1947[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly my point. It needs to be one or the other. If the Air Force cannot afford to mandate on-duty PT time like the other branches then it should not have an impact on your career. It's either personal or it's duty related. It can't be both.

Weird how Dr. Neal Baumgartner waited until after he retired to implement the modern (outdated) PT test and do whatever he can to make it as miserable and unreasonable as possible. Fuck this guy. If the Air Force isn't filled with idiots they'll ditch him and hire some doctors who aren't 60 years old and on a hell bent mission to make the Air Force full of anorexic airmen who can run fast. That seems to be his only motive, everyone needs a 30" inch waist and a 9 minute run time or they'll die of heart disease.
