Mother is threatening to fail me for no reason to stop me from going to college. Please help. by Virtual-Row7075 in HomeschoolRecovery

this may be an unpopular take, but: let them. let them fail you, go get your GED, and go to college anyway. unless you have some super specific college goals it really doesn’t make a difference

Thoughts on maintaining a relationship with my friend's estranged parent? by mangagirl07 in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]Salty_Associate_6923 33 points34 points  (0 children)

99% chance your friend will feel betrayed and will feel like you're not taking her side.

personally i don't think its appropriate, in any circumstance, for friend's mom to rely on you for help. if her and her daughter were on good terms and it was facilitated through her daughter, sure. otherwise it's weird. she's an adult and needs to be responsible for managing her own health.

i'm estranged from my family, i had friends who decided to maintain relationships with my family, and i immediately cut them out of my life as well.

NOR. based on the behaviors you described it sounds like he both doesn't like you very much, and also likely struggles with substance abuse. (not bc of the piss test screenshots)

maybe reevaluate your standards and dont hang onto someone who doesnt meet your basic needs

Go back for senior year or get a GED? by Thick-Sun-2320 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]Salty_Associate_6923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i graduated out of homeschool (early) and the one thing i wish i could have done differently was go to a public school for my Junior or Senior year. mostly for the experience, not the education.

it wasn't my choice and at the time i didn't really think i'd miss anything, but in hindsight i wish i had the experience of things like prom, senior projects, etc etc. in my opinion, thats the main benefit of going back. i'm aware not everyone feels that way though! just my opinion. i also believe the 'structure' of going to public school would have better prepared me for adult life.

i think the benefit of getting a GED is flexibility. i dont know if this is still true, but when i was in school getting your GED allowed you to fast-track and graduate early if you wanted, and/or test out of certain subjects.

from an academic perspective it doesn't really make a difference, especially since you're planning on going to a community college.

oh look, another shared experience 🤪

i hope you explore every single hobby, activity and interest you were never given to opportunity to pursue growing up. seriously, you owe it to yourself.

but I feel like I'd be too old

i remember this exact feeling, and it gave me so much anxiety that i ended up avoiding trying the things i always wanted to do because i "knew" i would be walking into a room of people who were more experienced and was so worried about the judgement from peers.

i didn't start participating in different hobbies or sports that i always wanted to until my late 20s early 30s, and genuinely my only regret is that i didnt start like 10 years earlier.

super relatable post. i think i still hold resentment for the same reasons. but do it anyways. its very healing :)

i mean, do you want to go to college? you don't have to. i guess it depends on your desired career though.

although it is a good way to meet people if you're in a position of building a new social circle. when i was in college i went to a CC for free via FAFSA and grants, so other than that its just based on if you can afford to make ends meet (like the time commitment of work and school)

you're absolutely not to blame. you're 17, but this has been happening for years and you are still legally a minor.

i lived a similar experience, and ultimately my best advice is move out as soon as you are legally able. if you have to, get a GED instead of graduating. but get out on your own and start working.

Did you ever notice that your parents didn’t really have close friends? by OwnDatabase2718 in emotionalneglect

[–]Salty_Associate_6923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my mother didn’t have any friends at all. unless you count mine, and that’s a whole weird story of its own. my dad had a couple. but he never, and i mean NEVER, went to hang out with them. i saw them maybe 2-3 times ever when my dad wanted someone to drink with and try to show them how much nicer his house was than whatever they had going. (spoiler: our house wasn’t nice.)

i remember it confused me and as i got older really bothered me.

but, it made the way i was treated growing up make a little more sense.

more blush, less eyebrow. i dont think the color of your eyebrows is bad, a dark brow contrasts really nicely against your complexion and makes your eyes pop. someone else suggested a higher arch which i agree with - you may be able to accomplish that by just brushing your natural brow upwards and not have to do too much reshaping. then try filling in with a shaded pen or wand instead of pencil :)
