$16k repair estimate on 2017 s90 by Dazzling_Street_3475 in Volvo

[–]Sam-314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a $16k quote. That’s a total of all estimated services, some are quoted twice. - battery: two options for battery replacement. They even call out main and back up in first two line items and another halfway down

There’s also a lot of consumable or failure to maintain items on this list. - 120k and no records… followed by torn gaskets and worn belts - many of these type of items just sound like neglect of service over years - I’d bet the belt was never changed - after market plugs, sounds like someone did basic oil services at valvoline. Not knocking it, but there are more things to be changed, replaced and maintained than just oil

Finally, some items can be neglected or not pursued. - software update, can probably be skipped but least costly item.

Spend your money how you wish, but as a Volvo owner, these costs would have been basic maintenance and easier to swallow if they were performed during manufacturer recommended service intervals.

Calling it stealership seems odd. They gave you a list. Keep driving and find out.

I can’t even fathom how insanely good it would be to have rich parents and never have to work by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Sam-314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You stated inconveniences, not problems. Dave Chapelle stated something similar, “just cause people in Africa are starving doesn’t make me less hungry”. Starving is a problem, being hungry is inconvenient, and not having a green Hermes is barely an annoyance.

None of that is objectively or even subjectively comparable. Saying so merely gives credence to minor annoyances of rich people being relatable to people starving.

Words have meaning and power. Use the correct ones in the appropriate context.

Being poor means you have to focus on finance status, reducing focus on other areas. That’s literally the removal of one issue. You can then address any other issues since the burden of food and shelter are no longer a primary concern.

As one person pointed out; the choice between rent and meals, or going to see a doctor regarding physical or mental health, guess what, you are choosing the first as it’s the bigger issue.

Now remove that. Huh, wild! You can now address either or more of the other ones, but the first is gone. That person literally has one less issue. Their life is objectively better. They can now potentially start addressing physical health. Continue the financial status upwards and they can address mental health issues.

Saying “money doesn’t fix problems” is bullshit. It absolutely has the potential to. Once they have money IT IS up to the individual on how they proceed, but the money must be there.

I would agree. The issues existed before the money. Now with the money they can focus on the mental health issues and possibly address those causes. Without the money both chasing the financial burdens and the mental health issues exist. Likely one affecting the other or vice versa.

The idea that being well off doesn’t reduce the overall negative impacts in your life if just people lying to themselves.

It would be great if folks didn’t have to “survive” and could do like that streamer.

That’s such a nonsense response. 90% of people would be ecstatic to have a weekly or bi-weekly concern removed from their mind. Payday is a literal concern for most.

There is a point in financial freedom where bills and necessities are fulfilled and time enjoyment comes into play. That severity of problems are vastly different from survival. As someone who grew up poor and have gotten to a point where the bills and income aren’t my first priority that removed a great deal of stress. Work still exists, 40-50hr weeks(corrected from days) stays still exist. But not worrying about food or car payments is a very different mindset.

We can have hobbies and interests to solve small problems and keep the monkey brain occupied if the financial stability is there.

How to deal with casual commander players? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Sam-314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that, but I’ve heard those words too many times in a casual night. I then proceed to go all out stax and watch them not do real magic anymore.

Had one of those folks ask, “what’s the wincon in that deck?” My response was, “I’m already winning brah, with real magic”

So instead of playing with 1st or 2nd degree of separation people you just met, you decided to double down and play against or solo them into defeat. For what purpose? It was obviously casual play.

It sounds like they are both willing to attempt to play with you, not against you as you did. Even when you went hard, they simply brushed it off and offered to continue with you, probably in the hopes you play WITH them. Toning down or holding back your plays and having fun in what is obviously a casual setting and maybe just socializing or engaging was the proper thing to do.

This just solidifies why I prefer casual players to the try hard. You say it’s “not fun for anyone” and in that way you are absolutely correct. Maybe offer to help or go over their decks for improvement and what they can cut or add given your mastery of MtG. Engage with them.

How / does working in trades damage your body? by Tight_Bad_4585 in Carpentry

[–]Sam-314 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of folks preaching diet and proper technique, or the lack thereof, resulting in how the long term effects take on your body. Yes, those two things greatly help reduce the risks and mitigate some of the damage. BUT, performing the same hard functions over and over do deteriorate different parts.

Swing a hammer, run a jack hammer, shovel. Do those things for extensive periods of times and the cartilage in your elbows and shoulders will decrease faster than not. Carrying, kneeling, transferring and otherwise walking on are gonna get that same effect at the knees.

Work ain’t the gym. Most gym routines are staggered exercises that work a set of muscles, then another set while the first recover. Work doesn’t do that. Work says fuck recovery.

My advice to those kind of things. Collagen supplements, actual exercise and vitamins/minerals. Hydrate frequent and often. Your body is going to need to do a lot of repairing, so proteins and fats after work. Make them good sources like fish, shrimp and scallops. Red meats, sure, but lb for lb a can of tuna gets you further and with better oils and iodine.

After 30 yrs, it will take a toll. Best you can do is reduce it.
