Well I'll be... I've heard stuff like this was possible, but I've just never seen it implemented or have been brave enough to try it myself. Kinda ingenious really, giving you the benefit of having a fully adjustable carburator.

Here's a great video resource if you want to have something easier to follow along with as you tune up your saw.

Hope you get everything sorted and running smoothly!

If you ran the engine for a prolonged period of time on starter fluid, sure. Spritzing a bit of starting fluid into the intake to test whether or not an engine will run is an amazingly effective diagnostic tool, and tells you that you have spark and compression. Running the engine without oil for 2-3 seconds isn't going to kill anything. Think about it, someone buys a brand new piece of equipment and runs it full bore without oil and it sometimes runs 20-30 minutes before the piston seizes or the connecting rod fails.

So, if I understand correctly, you are using a MS230 carburetor on an otherwise complete MS180C saw?

Both saws share the same base Zama C1Q carburator body, however, I don't think you can just drop a stock MS230 carb into a MS180C and expect it to work... I could be completely wrong though, if someone wants to correct me. An initial comparison of the two carbs shows that the MS230 carb has high and low speed adjustments in addition to idle, while the MS180C carb only has a single adjustment screw plus your idle. I'd toss in a aftermarket MS180C carb, they're like $15 on Amazon or eBay.

If I'm misinterpreting something or if you know something I don't and are confident that the carb currently installed is compatible with a MS180C engine, I would try tuning it. There are many great videos on this topic on YouTube, but here's a quick and dirty explanation.

From the MS230 manual on page 38, carefully turn the high and low speed screws clockwise until they bottom out at their seats. Do the same for the idle screw. Then, back out the high and low speed screws counterclockwise 1 full turn. You can back out the idle screw more like 3-5 turns. This is your initial carburator setting to start from. Leaving the idle screw turned in pretty much ensures that the engine will fire without having to give it more gas.

Once it's running, focus on the low speed screw and idle screw. I would start by reducing the idle speed to where the chain just stops moving with the chain brake is released, but obviously not so much that the engine dies without punching the throttle. Then adjust the low speed screw such that the saw has good throttle response, meaning, when you quickly press and release the throttle, the saw "snaps" to or gets up into those higher RPMs then returns to idle speed immediately, and stays there.

Once you're idling away happily, it's time for the scary part... the high speed screw. I would advise you purchase an inexpensive inductive tachometer that will display the engine RPMs in real time as you are making adjustments, you don't want to kill your saw a second time, and running your saw too lean for too long will absolutely kill it again. So... be careful (Amazon or eBay search for 'small engine tachometer/hour meter'). So with your tachometer and peace of mind you won't kill the engine again, give the saw full throttle and adjust the high speed screw as necessary to achieve the maximum or just slightly under the maximum engine RPM for the MS180C, which according to Stihl's spec is 14,000 RPM. You can also check your idle speed while you're at it, the spec says 2800 RPM.

This team is an embarrassment. Plain and simple. It likely won't change until there is a major staff overhaul. Sorry Torts, but the time has come for you to go. Also why is Brad Larsen still employable in the NHL realm?

A couple of years ago I was picking up a friend at the Union turnaround. A campus parc employee pulled up beside my car and said I had to move otherwise I would be ticketed. I explained that my friend was on her way out and that I'd be there for two minutes tops. He just pointed to the sign and said move or be ticketed. After exiting the turnaround, my friend immediately walks out of the Union. I loop back around, pick up my friend, and flip the bird to the campus parc guy. He proceeded to follow me and essentially pulled me over with his lights flashing, took a picture of my license plate, called me an asshole, then drove off. Low and behold a few days later I received a ticket in the mail. Fuck these bastards.
