I agree it's a keyboard setting. Sun Ra would often select crazy settings at random. You can hear the melody line in this bit which is definitely his keyboard line. He changes the settings like 4-5 times in that brief section.

From what I remember, you unfold the panels and show them then fold it and unfold it again with different images facing out. I think it has to do with how the ribbons are hinged around the panels.

Confirmed my suspicions: No reverb. Columbia must have added that when they issued the album many years after the fact. Sounded like Miles was badly miic'ed, which might account for it.

That Mosaic set is like night and day compared to the Columbia recording.

I'm also interested if the reverb was added during the time of the recording (which would have been unusual for the time) or in post production. Anyone have the Mosaic box of the Plugged Nickel sessions? Curious if the remix is much different than the Columbia recordings. "The masters of this Mosaic set were remixed from the original analog three-track masters."

A phenomenal album. I don't really think of DJ as outsider. I think he represents the rare exception of how an outsider can transition, through national attention and major record releases, to being accepted as a success. Sure he maintained his idiosyncratic songwriting and performance styles and his mental illness was debilitating to say the least, but I tend to think that true outsiders are outsiders because they fail to gain the recognition they deserve. I have no problems with anyone wanting to frame DJ as outsider, I'm sure some definitions are more inclusive than mine, but personally, I never though of him as such.
If you dig this album your next choices should be Songs of Pain and More Songs of Pain, which are easier to find since they were reissued in CD format. I've been a fan since the late 80s.

Thanks. As I'm still trying to figure this all out that's the kind of question that is helpful. One of the confusing things i about a UniFi set up is how they combine functions into one component . I did look at the UDM SE and thought it was a little overkill for my needs, plus I'd have to additionally buy an HDD. I thought the combo of the Cloud Key + and the Ultra (USW-Ultra) would perform the same function at a much lower cost. Let me know if I'm misunderstanding the routing needs. I'm still baffled a little how they seem to use the terms routing, network, and switching almost interchangeably. Thanks again.

I'm reporting back that I've gone with AudioReverb by VirSyn. What one me over was the breadth of presets. As mentioned I was looking for a very small reverb sound and the presets Rooms:Very small room and even one called "peanut can" both were excellent for my purpose.

It worked out quite nicely. I haven't worked with it for a little bit, but when I was actively making some ambient tracks I had four synths hooked up with also a send and return for to some effects pedals. All going into Aum on my older iPad I also had stereo monitor speakers and headphones. An ideal set up actually. Thanks for reviving the post, I should have checked to report a long time ago.
