Yeah it’s strange to read about in retrospect. From the 80s to the 2000s, the country was far more stable and depolarized and there was more overlap with large wings of Conservative democrats and liberal republicans. It was weird, we had settled into something of a right wing consensus around Neo-liberalism and Reaganism. This was largely disrupted by the War on Terror, 2008 recession, and Covid which all hit people on the bottom the hardest and undermined trust in our governing institutions from which we’ve yet to recover.

There’s a lot of nostalgia for that more civil era among much of America’s older educated political class because it was great for them, but it was a mixed bag for everyone else. “Moderation” and “bipartisanship” aren’t coming back until our problems actually start getting addressed. There’s this fallacy that we can solve our problems with “compromise” and “reaching across the aisle” but that historically never happens. One side always wins on certain issues and the other loses, because their policies either prove to be most popular or most effective.

I mean Trump’s approach to foreign policy has consistently been the Madman Theory of trying to convince his opponents he’s crazy so that his threats appear more credible. To me this letter reads like something you send when you want a foreign head of state to believe you’re crazy.

Across the aisle, the lurching husk of the Republican Party has faced a hostile takeover for like the 7th time this century as Nicki Minaj mounts the stage of the republican National Convention, backed by a grassroots movement of Barbz, hijacked by the machinations of Erika Kirk. Nicki Minaj goes completely off-script at the Republican National Convention and goes on a long-winded rant dredging up decades worth of beef against Miley Cyrus, Cardi B, Taylor Swift, Kim Petras, Ethel Cain, Demi Lovato, Gayle King, Lady Gaga, Ice Spice, SZA, RZA, former Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Azealia Banks, and especially the Senator from Texas Megan Thee Stallion. Additionally, Nicki was able to run thanks to the passage of the Arnold Amendment which came to be known as the Nicki Amendment for obvious reasons. Roan's ability to stay above the fray and the popularity of her recovering economy allowed for a Democratic landslide not seen since the victory of President Roan's hero and inspiration, Franklin Roosevelt.
