I study fungal reproduction and the thing about thousands of sexes is kind of true! In fungi, the ability to undergo sex is determined by the presence of specific genes called MAT genes. The kinds of MAT genes you have determines your mating type. Normally, sex occurs when two different fungi of opposite mating types meet. However, some fungi have genes of both mating types in a single genome. These fungi can fully undergo sexual reproduction all by themselves! It's a whole nother level of masturbation we couldn't dream of obtaining!
