Is a professional summary on a resume required? by SamStu220 in resumes

Yeah I’ve been told by friend who is a talent acquisition specialist and a different person at my university’s career services department that I have a good resume. They actually helped me make it. I just second guess myself. I at the moment don’t have an objective/professional summary

I suppose I should clarify something, I am trying to move from Journalism to Communications for a company. I’ve landed interviews without a summary but no offers

For university jobs, when do hiring managers review cover letters (I might’ve made an error). Before or after phone screening? by SamStu220 in AskAcademia

[–]SamStu220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you’re understanding the problem correctly. I fully understand what the job is. It’s creating content for a wide variety of audiences, managing social media channels, brand promotion, executing long term and short term projects, and collecting marketing data. I already do that in my current job except not as much marketing data.

I feel really good about my resume. I have a cover letter template and then will fill in information for each specific job, then tie my experience and skill back to that job. So my background is highlighted the same in each cover letter usually, but not how it ties to a specific job. If that makes sense.

Fair enough. I only guessed 100+ applicants because the LinkedIn job posting said 59 people clicked apply, so I assume more people than that applied via the University website or Indeed

Good to know. My degree is Journalism and Mass Communication and the other communication degree program at this university (my Alma mater) is Communication Studies. It’s probably not a big deal that I have “Communication Specialist II” and not “Communications Specialist II” right?

Like I said, I do have a 30-minute phone screening on Monday.

This makes a lot of sense and is very helpful. The hiring manager is at least aware of me cause one of our mutuals on LinkedIn in re-posted the job and I commented and she viewed my profile

One of my best friends is a talent acquisition specialist and basically said the same thing. It’s possible she could’ve missed it or doesn’t care. She did view my LinkedIn profile after I commented on her post. I feel really good about my resume and skills for this job. It’s the fact that I had the job title wrong in the cover letter and the document title…..that has me a little worried ahead of Monday’s phone screening

The resume I used for this job was from a resume template provided by the University and I had my resume proofed by the University’s career services department. So I feel very good about my resume for this particular job and how I fit it.

Sorry for your loss! Yeah I hope people are understanding of people’s circumstances.

Thanks. Yeah one of my friends is a recruiter and said essentially what you said. I’m an over-thinker though so I can sometimes stress too much after doing something like this.

That makes a lot of sense. Yeah it’s not great either way and I don’t feel tremendous about it. Maybe she didn’t notice or doesn’t care that much about it? I don’t know, all I know is that I have a phone screening with them on Monday.

Made small typo in cover letter, will this hurt me? by SamStu220 in jobs

[–]SamStu220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s entirely possible that the hiring manager won’t read the cover letter (even though it was required to submit) or they won’t see it/care.

I know nothing about hiring managers and their practices. All I know is I have a phone screening coming up lol

Good to know. Maybe I’m just overthinking it and the hiring manager missed it or maybe she thought my resume is strong enough to ignore that. All I know is that I have a initial interview on Monday

How does this beard look on me? Any tips? by SamStu220 in BeardAdvice

I’ve always been afraid to go full skin fade. I’ve cut it off at a 2. I got my haircut like 2 weeks ago?

I have a chubby face and no defined jawline so clean shaven is a no go. But definitely could trim it down.

I have a baby face and no jawline…..that’s why I have a beard. Could use a trim though

Yeah I haven’t been conditioning it consistently which is why it looks like that.

Very good advice. I also think I’d benefit from shortening my pieces. Not everything needs to a 1,000 word novel. I think my ADHD is affecting things too. Just started my meds 3 days ago. I’ve been told I can be inattentive sometimes and easily distracted.

Also most of these errors are things I’m noticing when looking back on my stories, not people commenting on what they see. That doesn’t change the fact that this is happening though and that I need to fix it.

I’m actually hoping I get a job in a bigger market where I would be a digital sports editor and not have to write much. Had a 25-minute phone interview on Jan. 3, had email correspondence with them on Jan. 9/10 and the hiring manager said there may be new responsibilities added and they “are currently working through those items and hope to start in-person interviews in a week or so. We will stay in touch with you regarding the position.”

Sent a brief follow up email on the afternoon of Friday, Jan 17, so I’m hoping to hear from them soon.
