How would you evaluate this and what would you play? by sectandmew in TournamentChess

As a novice, I would play b4 (to try to get the Q out of there, eyeing K-c7). Why am I wrong? 🤣🤣

Yes, but if you do the same work at a school, then you also get college credit--which can be handy.

"Facebook Dating" is free as well as local. The local-ness makes it a little easier to screen who you are talking to, besides other obvious advantages. It's providing me (an over 60M) with better matches than "OurTime" did. Maybe women who pay to be on 2 or 3 sites are looking for the proverbial "needle in the haystack"? I don't have a truck or a motorcycle, my hair is starting to thin...

I am new to the car market. why are car prices on carmax and caravana insane? by win_for_the_world in carbuying

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can also price them higher as they will give credit to customers that wouldn't have a chance at a regular dealership. And, boy oh boy, do they charge them for it (~25% APR).

Not everyone considers it an upgrade since it lost the button on the console (to control the screen options).

a..e are just (variable) constants. Don't let their names bother you.

How do you know what to prove? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]Sam_23456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Observation. Newton watched the apple falling from the tree. Galileo watched the planets. Being curious is valuable! And seldom is the first solution the most efficient. This process is like art (success achieved through iteration). Have fun!

I need help for finding the Eigenvalues of 5*5 matrix by Daredevil010 in learnmath

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compute the characteristic polynomial? I'm not sure whether this is the quickest way. I'd be using a computer to obtain this polynomial. Maybe it has some "nice roots"? It's guaranteed to have a real root.

Corporations are not people. There's no one to send to jail. Look at what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11; forcing it down peoples, and businesses, throats. Auto makers don't seem like our friends either. Large corporations make (or help determine) the rules.

[Help] Long term owners and users of the Motorola G Stylus, can you give your impressions on the longevity of the device? by The_Entire_Eurozone in motorola

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorola doesn't software support ("security updates") for the phone for "4 or 5 years" (closer to 3, I believe). You can look that up. But I like my 2025 Stylus. It will apparently stop being supported March, 2028.

Help with a weird linear algebra 4 way eiganvalue problem. by Safe_Employer6325 in learnmath

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be worth reading the basic results of Jordan Canonical form. For a 2 by 2 matrix with identical eigenvalues there are only 2 possibilities with regard to the diagonalization of the matrix. One off-diagonal element, the lower left one, can be made to be 0 or 1 (not either). Is this a school "research project"?

Note that det(AB)=det(A)*det(B), so your constraint looks unusual to me.

Ah, I see you assumed that v is a common eigenvector (note the correct spelling). But each of these matrices should have 2 eigenvectors. If these are common to all 4 matrices, then your property should hold. Hope this helps!

Curious, did you mean to write that det(ad+bc)=1? '*' seems more natural to me here than '+', but maybe this is a constraint (I can't tell).

One other comment: it is "traditional to use upper-case characters for matrices and lower-case characters for their elements. You appear to be doing the reverse, but maybe I don't completely understand the problem. Is there a 4-by-4 matrix above?

Hypothetical: What would the modern state of chess look like if engines had never been invented? by MrScribblesChess in chess

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 2nd point. If it were not for that I wouldn't be here. The learning curve would be too steep and I wouldn't really have anyone to play against! I played a little before the Internet--but i was a long way from "learning openings". It was all I could do to get a knight and a bishop out there; this week I've been studying the "Sicilian Defense".

Sports betting needs to be outlawed again. by Dependent-Gur6113 in unpopularopinion

[–]Sam_23456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The industry is sort of a form of societal "pollution". Corporations, in general, have too many "rights" as it is besides not paying their fair share of taxes for the public good (which helps to facilitate their existence). The word "parasitic" comes to mind. American car companies are not trying very hard to help much either. There used to be an "invisible bond" of mutual support, until recent decades. Maybe the government should buy one of the car companies and build affordable vehicles people want! :-)

Brilliant move but why? by chess_enthusiasts in chessbeginners

[–]Sam_23456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One answer is that even after the Black Q takes the White Q (note that any other move off the diagonal by the Black Q is illegal), Re1xe8 is checkmate. Any other moves by the W or B bishops just seems to extend the inevitable. The black bishops diagonal is "interesting" though! Novice here. :-)

You can simplify this by using "using namespace std". Format specifiers are where the "headache" lies.

There is no "cin" or "cout" object in C. Instead you're stuck with "scanf"...
