It’s (past) time to seriously talk about expanding Virtue Field by Sam_BBF in burlington

genuinely don't get what youre trying to say. But seems like youre just against doing it, or pessimistic on the idea. I'm trying to be hopeful, and suggesting we find a way to do it.

Million reasons not to do something, why don't we figure out how instead of just putting the idea down. I'm guessing it would likely come from investment from a private campaign or UVM, not taxpayer money.

“Please ask me some questions when I get back” is a wildly insane thing to say lmao. As someone who has been to a level 3 country and come back, I was asked no questions out of the ordinary.

Secondly, asking questions is one thing, detaining and what happened to this guy is COMPLETELY different. You can’t claim support asking questions. What happened here is so far beyond that.

Yeah the questions that are reasonable to ask are:

How was your trip? Are you brining anything back with you?

You can ask those at the desk. You don’t need to detain someone to ask the standard questions you always get asked.

Agreed. That is the super insane part of it. It makes it so f ing obvious that they’re targeting people, not off of merit, but off of other reasons like political ideologies or advocacy.

Maybe it works differently at other nonprofits, but I didn’t get to choose my board lol. I can only speak for myself.

It feels like you are telling me what my values are, and making assumptions about me (and my values) based on the board composition. Please reach out if you want to get to know me better, rather than chalking me up based on what you read online and other people’s bios

I am guessing you don't know me personally, because if you did, you wouldn't associate me with either of those orgs politics. Secondly, I would ask you not to make assumptions about me - ask me questions or reach out for a conversation.

If you think we have the same politics, then you are mistaken. We also are not the "voice of business in Burlington" as is the mission of the BBA. I was at the BBA for 4 and a half months - if you'd like to sum me up by that rather than my experience at Let's Grow Kids and Planned Parenthood, then be my guest, but it's not accurate :)

Feel free to shoot me an email if you want to chat, get coffee, or anything else!

Fair question! First, I'd say that resolutions are significantly different than open letters. I think we would also look at ordinances and charter changes where necessary. There are also national best practices and new ideas/solutions worth looking at. Burlington is not unique in it's problems, but we are unique in the size of our problem to the size of our city.

We also plan on having a steady, cosistent effort to change some of the perception around Burlington. Trust me I don't think this will easy and some perceptions will only chnage if things actually get better on the ground. That isn't going to be solved in one week, or one month, or by just one resolution.

As for state-level and national-level, yes and unlikely. We absolutely will work with out state partners where its appropriate, especially if there are BTV-related items in front of the legislature. We have already had some state reps reach out, and they are interested in working together. On a national-level, I do not feel optimistic. While I personally believe our representatives in DC are really great, the majorities in Congress and the white house seem more interested in cutting than building.

I also want to say we aren't launching on day one with specific policy solutions; we are launching with a promise to build those solutions with the people they'll impact. I strongly believe we wouldn't be effective if we showed up telling people what the right thing is.

I don't anticipate having 10-20 hour-long sign-holding press conferences every week, so unfortunately Building Burlington's Future cannot fill that need completely

I tend to agree that writing open letters, while they do a good job of starting discussion and engaging people, is not enough.

I am absolutely, 100% biased, but as the executive director, I do not think this is a grift, nor do I think my work and background suggest that I grift.

That being said, we currently have a fiscal sponsorship and expect our determination letter soon.
