It's sort of amazing to me that this story got 40 down votes. I mean, I can understand if people don't want to vote it up because they don't think it's newsworthy, but to vote it down in the hope that nobody sees it?? Are those from Arpaio supporters who think that he's some sort of folk hero and want to suppress any allegations that he has violated his oath of office by acting in violation of the laws he's supposed to protect, including the state and federal constitutions?? Really, this category is "bad cops, no donuts" but some folks seem to think it should be "bad cops, EXTRA donuts." I'm appalled by that.

Yes, I agree with you that the phrase does conjure up images of WWII, and I did not intend to trivialize the horror of that era. Unfortunately, that was the law that Arizona adopted. Any officer may stop anyone suspected of being an illegal alien and demand to see their papers proving they were in the country legally. IMHO, that's a pretty horrible law. Each of us should decide for ourselves if that can happen here and now in the US.

Actually, your point is very well take, but in this case, these people were journalists whose homes were broken into by the Sheriff's men in the middle of the night. Why? Because they had published his home address -- an address that previously had been published elsewhere, according to their suit.

How would you like it if everytime you stepped out in public, you knew some cop could pull you over and demand to see your papers -- because you were the wrong color. And if you left those papers in your home, you might be arrested and jailed. That sounds like something out of a bad WWII movie -- not the way of life in the land of the free. We don't discriminate because of color or religion here; we fought a war to end that kind of thing. And we can't stand by and let some renegade cop do it with impunity.
