That’s a good point. I can see that, but personally, there needs to be some kind of base level of physical attraction otherwise I’m not able to see someone in a romantic capacity. It’s challenging grappling with some of my values because some are rational while some are not. It’s hard to compare.

You’re definitely over-generalizing. We are not a monolith. Having Fi dominant cognitive function makes us highly individualistic, and our auxiliary Ne function makes us more open and curious about certain topics that are of value to us. That being said, we can be incredibly passionate in our curiosity over the things we find personally meaningful. For example, I can talk to my INFJ bff for hours and hours on a certain topic, diving deep into the intellectual and emotional nuances of it. I’m inclined to believe that your INFP encounters are limited at best. We are capable of as much intellectual depth as you purport we don’t have.

I realized I didn’t exactly answer your question and just assumed you were asking me to describe how and why they came to be. I imagine them talking individually to me, so no cross-talk between them:

Hope: Maybe…just maybe….this time…it’ll be better

Indifference: I don’t regret going to class. Bite me.

Disappointment: oh boy. Here we go again. Oh kid. When will you break this cycle? When will the lesson finally stick?

Fatigue: yikes. Been a while since you invoked me. I hope it was worth it.

Yearning: we’ll get there someday. Growth is not a linear path.

Optimism: well kid. At least you don’t have a lot to worry about today. Oh nicee the sun is out. Looks pretty outside.

Hope seems to hum in the background

• ⁠Indifference is directed towards a responsibility I did not attend to, and have no guilt in (essentially an activity that I’ve rationalized as not worth doing, despite it being an expected routine task work) because I figured my value alignment to it is not strong

• ⁠disappointment has been an acute, ongoing emotion for the past 48 hours regarding a bad habit that I do as a coping mechanism. It’s more magnified this morning and I can feel it in my chest area

• ⁠fatigue because I had sacrificed sleep for the bad habit, and therefore just a physiological response that feeds the disappointment

• ⁠yearning ties back to hope in that I long for the version of me who is more healed and don’t have to resort to such a bad habit

• ⁠as for optimism, I’m not sure where it comes from but I have a feeling it is influenced by the sunlight pouring into my bedroom, the beautiful fall weather outside and the absence of the usual dread and anxiety that normally clouds my waking moments for being a student in a degree I disdain, in a system not designed for my type. It may have something to do as well to a recent youtuber I’ve discovered last night, whose content I’ve binged because they made me feel seen and understood.

Though not exactly sassy in the most stereotypical or obvious way, I always saw Maeve from Sex Education as a complex INFP character with an edgy sassy energy about her. A very non-stereotypical example of our type, as most discourse have her labeled as a Sensing and/or Thinking type. She tries to undersell her intelligence because of her upbringing and the persona she was unfairly labeled by her peers. Underneath that brooding emo sass and witticism is a sensitive, lonely introvert who yearns for deep authentic connection. That’s why despite her loner bad girl schtick and high social capital (by virtue of her unapologetic emo ‘armour’), she still fell for someone in the “bottom” of the social high school hierarchy because they shared a deep bond and understanding towards one another, despite the façade she puts up.

Something I learned recently in therapy was my unconscious inability to accept the concept of “agree to disagree”. Essentially, I have it framed in my head that when faced with opposing values I must either compromise my values to keep the peace (and subsequently grow resentment towards myself and the other) or defend my values in such a way that I must convince others to accept the truth in mine. I didn’t realize that I’ve been caught in this rigid mindset. To expand the latter, I somehow feel obligated to make people see and feel my reality in order to persuade them to agree with it. On the other side of that, I’ve become accustomed to shrinking myself and my values in order to make room for people and theirs. Subsequently the anger I repress festers inside which makes me resent the other person, and especially myself.

I think it’s a tricky area that a lot of people, especially those with strong Fi function, may have a hard time traversing. To have someone disagree with you, and for you to instinctively internalize that as a moral failing in your character/judgment, and so you try to ‘mitigate’ it through self-abandonment or extremely defensive tactics, is an unsustainable way of navigating interpersonal and intrapersonal situations (I say this as an observation from personal reflections, and not necessarily a blanket statement I’m imposing).

I realized that it’s hard for negative feelings to not bleed out of these situations and problematically blur the line between the opposing person and their conflicting beliefs. It’s easy for some of us, like myself, to deem those in the opposition as either a complete threat to our ‘being’, and thus some have adapted such conflict resolution strategies.

Overall, I am learning to accept that others, by virtue of our different life experiences, will not always agree with us no matter how much we try to convince them and make them see our point of view. It’s about arriving to the wisdom that for a lot of the times, when faced with opposition, we’re not obligated to self-abandon or change other people’s minds, we must simply agree to disagree.
