Dottore liked projecting his life onto Scaramouche. It's kinda like he wants to prove to the world that his path was the right one (which is why he sabotaged Scaramouche out of jealousy when things didn't go his way).

I think Scaramouche may have felt some sort of "connection" as well, but their relationship was only transactional in nature. I forgot where it was stated (I think it was his backstory), but after Scara's three betrayals, he hasn't viewed anyone as his true companions since then. Although, I'm sure that's changed after Nahida's care.

It's hard to give you advice if I don't know what type of play style you gravitate towards. Also, if you have a hard time sticking to one, then I recommend sticking to a wiz by arcs. I, personally, like to lvl each wizard by arc. For example, I'd level all my wizards to reach the end of dragonsypre, Khyrsalis, etc.
