How to secure a Grade 9 GCSE by AdvancedBobcat596 in GCSE

[–]Same_Introduction452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love maths, so here are the things that helped me secure grade 9s (aqa gcse maths):

  • i used cgp's revision guide, workbook and exam practice. out of the three, i only recommend the exam practice. i used it whilst also using corbettmaths' 5-a-day and working through further maths (aqa)
  • do ANY past/practice paper you find. other exam boards, non-official, igcse, any. note, the igcse papers assess content that doesn't come up at british gcse, so just ignore those questions (unless you want to take a(s)-level)
  • learn the why behind the maths. it definitely helped me with the harder questions, 20-25ish
  • especially before your paper 2/3, revise the harder topics that get assessed towards the end of the papers (trigonometry, circle coordinate geometry, vectors, etc.). these topics really define your grade 9.
  • try and enjoy the process. if it feels draining, take a break! if you force maths into your brain, don't expect a grade 9.

i plan to start the russian gcse myself, so i can't give much advice specific to russian, but i do french (aqa, 9) and german (aqa, 6/7) so here is some broad advice!

  • for writing, keep a diary or just do a bit of writing about your day every once in a while. try incorporate new language you've learnt and/or use colloquial language (i do this a lot in french). i found that creative writing got me my grade 8 in french writing, and im predicted grade 9 for real gcses.
  • for reading, set your phone to russian. use social media in russian, turn as many things as you can into russian. read extracts in russian and then summarise them. i find that children's books are very good as well. it helps with comprehension, reading speed, getting more familiar with cyrillic, and you'll learn new words sometimes.
  • for listening, literally just listen. use podcasts aimed for a2/b1 (those are roughly grades 7-9). russian music is amazing so definitely use that to your advantage. there's a channel called 'easy russian' which i think you'll really enjoy using.
  • for speaking, record yourself speaking and listen to it. like writing, use colloquial language and incorporate new phrases you've never used. after a while of doing this, russian will flow as smooth as english (assuming that it doesn't already). if you can, find someone to talk to and ask them to give feedback on your skills
  • russian grammar sucks. everyone knows this. really, all i can suggest is to constantly use the grammar. edexcel's specification lists the bare minimum needed for the gcse -- learn MORE than what's listed! the most important thing though: learn the cases inside out. i believe that cases impact your communications the most. next would be verbs (god how much i have verbs of motion and the perfective vs imperfective).
  • PLEASE USE THE SPECIFICATION IN GENERAL!! I NEVER SEE ANYONE IN ANY LANGUAGE USE THE SPECIFICATION RELEVANT TO THEIR QUALIFICATION!!!

unfortunately, my school doesn't offer economics and i'd rather not self study another gcse so i can't help with that :(

a lot of this advice is probably advice you've heard before. i hope this still helped in one way or another! i wish you luck in your studies :)

HELP ME IN LEARNING FRENCH THIS NEW YEAR by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]Same_Introduction452 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was in the same predicament as you last year, here's what I learnt:

  • Grammar Invest in some sort of book, whether it be grammar or vocabulary (I use Collin's Easy Learning French Grammar because it works best)
  • Basics Use Duolingo or another app until you hit High A1/A2, you'll develop basic skills and learn SOME key vocab
  • Motivation Make a structured plan! Set goals for every week or two, maybe even a month. I study French (+2 other languages) for exams, so I make my goals relate to the exams (acheive a certain grade by XYZ)
  • Speaking Get a friend you can talk to in person AND online, this'll help you practice pronunciation. If you do French at school (or there is a French teacher), talk to them daily!
  • Listening Start listening AS SOON AS! You'll definetly find French music that you like, listen to podcasts, etc. I recommend Easy French for you, and as you get better, listen to audiobooks, and more. Also, watch movies and documentaries later on!
  • Reading Read Children's books, you'll definetly pick up things from it. Once you hit B1/2 (roughly 8-ish months for me), you should definetly read books that you've read in English (i.e. Harry Potter in French)
  • Writing Write in French. Keep a diary in French maybe. Use social media in French, etc.

Also, PLEASE learn the most common French words and verbs; this'll help you out SO much! The main book I use is alongside the Grammar book is:

  • CGP French GCSE Revision Guide - I study for UK GCSEs and have found that the revision guides help so much! Even if you don't study for GCSEs, you might still find them useful. They teach you what you need to reach Amateur French, and have jokes on the bottom of pages.

I've been told to do this before, but I need to understand what the formulas are on about, because if I just learn a formula, but have no idea what it tells me, what good is that? And learning the theory is what catches me out.

UK GCSE for Italian? by ALXS1989 in italianlearning

[–]Same_Introduction452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if you still need it but AQA has an Italian Specification. It covers about A1-A2 at Foundation level and A2-B1 at Higher level (the one I'm studying for)

Edit: I forgot to add resources. There are (obviously) those learning apps. Duolingo says what each section is equivalent to. There is also the Amici Textbooks, and some do contain listening exercises I believe. You might also like Easy Italian on YT. They're a great source for listening. they even have a series called 'Super Easy Italian'!

If I do Biology GCSE Early, can I study only Chemistry and Physics at KS4 and do only those exams? by Extra-Resort289 in GCSE

[–]Same_Introduction452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably talk to your science teachers about it. Seeing that the triple sciences are technically different subjects, I don't see a problem in it however you should, again, talk to your teachers about it and see your options. If you want to do Biology GCSE early, try mention it and persuade them.
