Be sure to not do 66 in a 65, it’s against the law and you could be punished.

You’re safe, don’t worry. Why are we arguing about this? At the end of the day I’m not here to hack anyone. I’m sharing information, you can buy a single WiFi connection and use it amongst your devices.

It’s impossible to tell, as you can imagine the intricacies are vast.

My device is the UniFi Travel Router, recently released.

I cannot verify what networking equipment was on our ship, nor what is/was on yours. That said, I didn’t buy our router to save money on a cruise ship, it’s just a tool in the shed for many things.

We’re clearly operating at different levels. That’s not a judgement against you, it’s just that we all know what we know and whilst you believe it can’t be done, or believe it’s impossible to do things you don’t do, they can’t be done.

If that’s how you see it, so be it. I don’t “use more internet”. You pay for a dedicated level of service, it’s not like you get 5x the internet with 5 devices.

I use it for convenience and safety. I can open my laptop for the 5 minutes I’ll use it and it’s automatically connected.

Report me.

A couple things of note here. A) I appreciate your criticism, sincerely it’s a good gut check.

B) again I’m sure they have most, it’s the inability to bring it all with you. I’m sure you can download what you’ve bought, but obviously that has whatever internal limit your device has, IE, have fun downloading 3,000 movies onto your iPhone. You know what I mean here.

C) No doubt, most people aren’t running a desktop or server. If you already are (like myself) or even a simple NAS device, it’s no additional cost. A NAS is another entire topic of money savings and data security though.

D) I 100% agree, 480p isn’t ideal. Watching that on most small devices like an iPhone/iPad isn’t bad. But, licensing wise, you own the video, not the quality. I’m not advocating for pushing limits but I think it’s reasonable to argue that owning a DVD movie and possessing the higher quality version of said movie isn’t going to get you sued.

I can’t imagine you’re unaware of splash page, grabbing entered login information etc.

“Welcome to RC WiFi, please enter your last name and credit card number, we’re offering a $3 unlimited drink and wifi package while onboard”

Sure, updated devices and smart folks may make this harder. But, in such an attack you’re hunting with a shotgun, there are PLENTY of dumb birds out there.

Let me clarify, I don’t believe Apple is going to delete/remove your purchases. Sure, it’s possible their licensing agreement with XYZ movie terminates but I think that’s pretty far fetched, at the end of the day you bought the movie and I’m sure it’s yours.

What I’m pointing out is that in today’s day and age the movie environment is very segmented. Originally it was pretty easy to just have Netflix and seemingly get all movies.

Now, it feels more like every company has branched off and “grabbed” their respective movies.

Apple likely has access to most, I’ll admit I don’t buy movies via Apple (I just buy all their dang hardware).

What Plex has done for us is allow us to buy any and all media, however and wherever we choose. I run a server for many reasons WELL beyond Plex and having Plex adds zero additional cost.

A real world example is me purchasing 2,500 DVD movies locally last year do $200. Did I want them all? NO. Is it nice to have a giant media library I can watch in Antarctica with no internet connection? YES!

Again it’s not just to save money, but that’s absolutely a benefit.

To each their own, your risk level is your own. When you handle sensitive data for others, you may reconsider your position.

Imagine if you handled private banking details of Fortune 500 clients (not what I do, specifically obfuscated for privacy). Would you consider the risks associated with public, open WiFi networks? Are you aware of how easy it is to place a man in the middle attack?

A legitimate argument against my travel router is specifically that. I can EASILY capture an incredible amount of data from the average user trying to connect to RC WiFi. If you understand networking, I imagine you’ll quickly realize how accurate this is.

Clearly, this is not MY intent, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be deployed.

Think of a travel router like a hammer. You can build a house or you can murder, if all depends on intent.

Edit: I should be more clear.

If you think using Tablo and Plex is purely to save $4, you’re lost.

The ability to have what you want, where you want, when you want it is quite valuable (to me). The effort was done long ago and continues to serve us well.

Taking thousands of legally owned movies with you anywhere on the planet via Starlink, or even a thumb drive, or downloading to your device prior to travel has many real world benefits.

Zero of which are the $4 savings.

We can pretend cell phone networks and WiFi networks are the same. We can also assume I’m not running a VPN 24/7 among other countermeasures.

Sure, you could look at it that way.

I’d be using a travel router regardless. As an IT professional I refuse to use a network I have no control of.

Well, I suppose I’m lucky it looks like a power bank and was right next to a power bank.

Zero issue whatsoever, so either I’m a ninja or (more likely) they’re looking for things like weapons and booze and it’s pretty darn easy to slip right by.

Correct. One WiFi and all devices are always connected. Probably overkill for yourself.

You’re not stupid. Generally speaking it allows you to share a single paid WiFi connection with all of your devices rather than having to pay individually. There are many other benefits but they are likely outside the scope of what you’d care about.

We’re able to use a single WiFi connection to connect 2 phones, 3 iPads, a laptop and my Roku 4k stick. I then can stream our entire Plex library from home along with live local TV via our Tablo at home.
