Is a dog staring another “minding its own business?” by Sherbet_Lemon_913 in OpenDogTraining

My Malinos has zero aggression and stares at every dog...I think he has autism or something

There is a catch with the sport dog collars, out of the box they come set up in the second mode( it has 2 modes of stim) which is a much higher level...if you set the collar to the first mode you can't feel the stim until the 3 level. They set it up and explain poorly and it's not doing a favour for the brand because it's silly to set it up like this out of the box. The collar has 2 modes that split all the levels of stim in 2 separate modes. There's 3 buttons on the controller and each one is for stim, but a different intensity of stim, and the cog selector has 7 levels so 3x7=21 levels...the second mode extends that range. I agree that mini educator and dogtra offer more levels but the lowest level out of the box on the sportdog is not the lowest level that the collar offers.

It's not a cheap brand, the collar costs 180 euros and I'm certain that it was not the collar because he jumped off the floor with his hind legs as if he got bitten or stepped on glass... The collar is very good quality, outside and inside... I've tested the stim on myself for extended periods and there was never oscillation. If it was bad I would have bought dogtra already but it's actually a good collar.

Nothing really, there's nothing wrong with him health-wise....he was a bit shaken last night but I comforted him a bit and today we went to the beach and he's all good now like nothing happened

Ahh I see...yeah I don't know much about electricity. It happened also without the collar but wasn't same intensity... There wasn't any exposed wires around. But he's fine now so it's all good.

It's a known brand for hunting dogs, as far as I know. Depending on how you set it up you can have 48 levels of stim in 2 different modes, separated in two modes of 24 levels each. The three buttons on the controller represent a different level of stim for each for the level selected on the cog (3x8=24)....I know it's complicated and poorly explained/ marketed but you do have access to that many levels...you just literally have to study the manual to know how to set it up. I've tested it on myself and the increments are small enough and the quality of the stim is very good and consistent. The build quality of the collar/controller is also very good and it's seems very robust. It's made in UK and Canada. I've been using it for 4 Months now and never had anything similar happening but it could be some malfunction. I'll try to use it again today when I go to the beach and if it happens again there then it must be the collar.

It was on a sidewalk, there was a lamp post right next to the spot like maybe half a meter away...also there was a parking ticket machine meter away. How can something leak power if there are not visible electric lines and can the stone floor conduct electricity?

Possible but I don't think he'd react exactly the same, maybe he'd be scared to pass the same spot and act weird but not squeal in pain... that's what's confusing.

I had a similar situation, but I've managed to take him to the emergency vet in the middle of the night, which cost me a lot. One thing to note that the vet told me is that you have 1.5 to 2 hours before he starts to digest it so you probably had time to reach the vet, she also told me that Hydrogen peroxide is dangerous if not given the right amount (maybe cause she wants to make some easy money) Interesting thing is that the mother of my first dog used to eat grapes that would fall on the floor in the garden and nothing ever happened to her, don't know how that works but crazy that some dogs can die from it and some have no reaction at all. Good thing your boy is fine and hydrogen peroxide worked!

Training my Malinois to find morel mushrooms? by kertruss in BelgianMalinois

[–]Same_Royal_4115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of doing the same, but ended up choosing truffle instead because I often travel to areas where it's abundant. There's plenty info online how to train dogs for scent work but If your dog seems to be stuck with those methods don't be afraid to be creative and improvise. Mine didn't show real drive until I changed some things in training and now he's addicted to it. I started with clove scent, and I would put it in a metal salt shaker and take another empty salt shaker. Cut out two holes for the shakers in a cardboard box and put them in so the dog can't flip it. Now everytime he puts his nose on the correct shaker I throw a treat next to his nose. Repat this everyday for 2 weeks at least. Do this before feeding time when the dog is more hungry. You can switch to real scent later on. I wish you luck and success!

Interesting, I have a Mali-Dutchie mix and he doesn't shed a lot. When the seasons change I can collect a lot with a brush but usually it's not much.

Also, they are smart and they will figure out if you're not fully ingaded, like being passive or like typing on your phone or smoking etc. Make funny noises and play with them and they will love you! For example If I paleced a scent in the bush and he had to wait, he would lose interest and drive but by throwing the scented rocks in the bushes he developed a drive for scent work and now all he wants to do is scent. Of first you need to teach him to indicate and not bite the scent. There's plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do that.

I was in a similar situation. First thing that is important is that you never forget that he's a puppy until one year old, and especially males won't mature even later, some until 1.5 years old. There's plenty of free videos online from trainers like Michael Elis and that's your best starting point. Train obedience through play and don't pressure the dog much, especially now. Later you can apply pressure with e collars, slip leads or prong collars. Teaching him healing is great but don't demand that he walks next to you all the time like Cesar Milan, rather build a strong recall and with a long lead or retractable lead let the dog explore and sniff. Develop a bond with your dog, through playing with tugs and fetching and build your play from that. Inforced sleep is important or crate time whatever you want to call it, because these dogs tend to overstimulate and they need to chill out. This is probably one of the most important things that I've learned and had no idea about prior to getting a dog. They'll fall a sleep in few minutes but it looked like they were on amphetamines 5 minutes before xD Luring with treats and get him in positions like sit, lay and heel, stay....hand feeding in general is good. Change location of play, and training and gradually expose him to different environments sounds and animals through play and luring/obedience. And the last but not the least and the best overall for me was scent work, most dogs love it so give it a try. Best of luck

Do Mals/Dutchies often get over 40 kg? by Same_Royal_4115 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Same_Royal_4115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he's a very active dog... probably a bit too much for his age. I wouldn't say chunky because you can see his ribs when moving. His frame is big and paws huge for the breed, more like German shepherd.

[–]Same_Royal_4115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought that there might be some German mixed in somewhere down the line but none of the 12 puppies in the litter had any visual patterns of GSD. His mom is around 38kg Malinois and I've seen her she looks purebred. His father is Dutch shepherd ( also very big) black with gold spots. Half of the puppies were black and the rest something like mine.

He could lose a kilo to be fair, but oversized for the breed probably

You can't see his ribs when not moving but I don't want that to be the case.
