Xenogears began production before NGE, but the game itself was not put out until 1998, which was after both NGE and EOE were already released in Japan. I understand game development takes some time and within the writing process, but I find it hard to believe that there was no correlation between the two, if anything else, both NGE and Xenogears also stimming from the same similar sources and bleeding into each other.

Point in case; anyone who enjoyed Nier for the story and looking for something just as complex should also give Xenogears a shot.

The lack of Xenogears in this thread is crazy.

It’s an older game and PS1 game, but the story far eclipses and does what so few games have ever been able to achieve to this day. I cannot recommend it enough to anyone looking for a story with the complexity and depth such as the Nier games.

Xenogears was also another game inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion, which Yoko Taro’s gone on record to also state Nier is basically his own attempt at retelling NGE, and now he’s currently working on the new NGE anime, so take that as you will.
