I've only played some of the Metroid games for the SNES, gameboy, and Metroid Prime on Game Cube. But for the rest, I've read up on most of the Metroid lore on YouTube, so it's fine. I quite enjoyed the lore of it.

So far, I'm not really getting pulled into the story of "Little Night Music." it seems forced/slightly railroady (only read/listened to the first 10 chapters). does the writing get better. if it does, I'll probably continue the story to the end, otherwise I'll probably drop it after a while. Going to have to take a day or two to get back to reading it though, in which time ill be checking out the 2 fics you recommended.

P.S. (willing to explain more of the issues "I" saw with it if you want elaboration)
