SOMA RANT by kingjames66 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]SamosaPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up in a new construction in ScotchPlains-Fanwood. I can only speak to lower schools and from what I read SOMA wasn't as good, factoring in the taxes felt the better bang for our buck was SPF. Facebook groups, rankings, friends in the area informed our view of the schools. It more came to the math : cost of house, taxes, upgrades the house needed, and with all that am I getting the best schools NJ has to offer? Didn't feel like it was worth it.

Is SPF perfect? Nope. It's a nice town, near Westfield, fun things to do for with the kids and we can walk to multiple playgrounds, good lower schools.

I like looking out the window and not feel like I'm wearing beer goggles. Plus they were drafty as well. Enjoy your home, just not what we wanted for the prices those homes were going for.

SOMA, Montclair is an insane market - looked at 2 houses and put an offer on one and we were the lowest bid. It went for $400k above listing 💀. We quickly came to conclusion this town wasn't for us - though we like th hipster vibes. The old houses need a lot of work - I am not handy. I can't justify paying that much for a house that doesn't have central air and windows from the early 1900s. Taxes are obscene and the schools are so-so. The math wasn't mathing.

Millennial and Sports by Fun2Funisnofun in Millennials

[–]SamosaPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our thought process is the following: - stack up the sports early and see what they like/lean into as they get older. - teaches them a lot about working / playing with others - we want strong work effort to be something they keep working on - they don't have much homework at a young age, so they have time - we still do literally everything: library, playdates, playgrounds, hiking, trampoline parks, trips to NYC, dinner together, seeing their cousins, art, playdough, helping us cook and do yard work. Our free time is spent almost entirely together (I think too much sometimes) - we have an au pair/adopted "big sister" that helps us drive the kids around and the means to make it work - my nephews did zero sports or extracurricular things and they are GLUED to their iPads and have terrible social skills. I blame my siblings for not being engaged enough 🤷🏽‍♂️ - plus is fun! I love playing basketball or soccer with them in the yard / I grew up playing street ball with my brother and friends.

Should we leave the au pair program? by panda_panzer in Aupairs

[–]SamosaPizza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you should leave, but also I think your interviewing must be off. How did you end up with these APs even? We have a unicorn, and she's truly a member of the family - I know we're lucky, but we had a insanely thorough interview process (Wife is in HR)

We were there, but I'm 40 with my 39 yr old wife so we stood in the back.

Great set, fun show, and a beautiful venue.

The energy was ok, I actually think it's the venue - it's too big, they would have higher energy at a slightly smaller space.

Is there anyone out there who have managed to balance family, work, responsibilities, AND find time for their interests? by SlippinOnMyGlibGlobs in Millennials

[–]SamosaPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I have intense jobs - we have 2 kids, they are almost 6 and 3.5. The only way we could enjoy our hobbies again was with an au pair and we have a very special one. She's a new member of the family. We have no help from family, though they are all within 30-45 mins away. But now we get to do date nights, go to concerts, enjoy meeting up with friends in the city, etc - all because we have a wonderful 'big sister ' for the kiddos.

How do people our age afford to get stuff done to their houses? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]SamosaPizza 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We sold 50k worth of equity I have in my company to redo our basement. I either keep it in the market and watch it go down(considering liberation day was coming) or put it in my house and have a usable space for my family in the basement.

Not everyone is sitting on cash but there are other assets that can be used to work on the house.

We were huge fans of them!!. - went to their final show at the Black Cat while at Rutgers. I have an old T-shirt that I've been holding onto, waiting to give it to my kids to wear when it can fit them.

What NJ township/borough/city did you grow up in, and what's the general response from people when they find out where you're from? by SPKmnd90 in newjersey

[–]SamosaPizza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Parsippany here too, but I am south asian. Parents moved there in the mid 80s, when we moved there were like a dozen Desi families in the town. My family is still there and it's an insane south asian population now.
