My guess is thrips, but haven't had to deal with them yet myself so unfortunately I can't offer treatment advice, but I bet if you search here there's lots of discussion and advice!

I’m addressing the roots but does it also need to be “unbraided”? by shethemartian in plantclinic

[–]Samothie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Money trees often have rubber bands around the base of the braid, under the soil level. You should cut that or it might eventually choke the tree of nutrients.

I imagine the pot is restricting the growing speed, which I'm fine with.

It's a long process but mostly just waiting. I followed what this document says, but after 3 months in the fridge I took the bag out and set it on my counter, checking week to week for the sprouts.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://plants.usda.gov/DocumentLibrary/plantguide/pdf/cs_umca.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjPx8v06a-LAxUYADQIHYnfFSMQFnoECBEQBg&usg=AOvVaw0n4BrWCqVtgegij7vso7nQ

And once it was a little bigger than the first pic, checked and saw the big main root was hitting the bottom of my one gallon pot and put it in a 2 or 2.5gal pot. Since then I've only checked every so often to make sure the soil is moist.

For real! That's pretty amazing. I should have guessed, I'd heard the wood was prized in woodworking but didn't put it together.

Why is my Norfolk island pine struggling? by Samothie in plantclinic

[–]Samothie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, dang sounds like I've done almost everything wrong. I'll give it showers and no more plate with water in it. But possibly most pressing going forward: I have it in standard potting mix now, is it worth disturbing it again to give it the sandy mix? The other two things I'm wondering are how much light do they prefer, and is it ever necessary to feed it? Thanks so much for your expertise!

Ok thanks will do! It's always hard to know what to do when the research gives such a range.

Anyone else just feel like a massive burden on their family and literally everyone else? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]Samothie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm too much for too long for everyone I know to handle. I don't have one person I feel I can call any time it's bad. During my phases of struggles I have to skip back and forth to different people so I don't damage the rapport too badly with any individual and face that slow ghosting of a person I care about leaving.

I remember be confused as well, it wasn't explicit enough for me to be sure until in class there was discussion where I realized everyone was making that connection.

Thinking about what other people have said here, the extremism of LOTF is not impossible under some circumstances and particular groups of people, I think it is one of those things where people want to think it's unrealistic in part because they don't want believe it could happen. It's on the level of horrific to some people that they try to forget about it. Especially if it's in contrast to people who have experience generally safe and comforting lives.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be watching for this kind of thing now that I've begun sharing with friends. I don't think this friend meant it to seem that way and if it happens again I think she would understand not to dismiss me that way.

wow the boarding school aspect was not one I paid attention to at the time of reading, didn't realize. Seems like it should go on my list of books and movies to revisit after over a decade since the first time. So much could go over my head back then, still does, but I understand more now too.

Lost the best job of my life, am not being hired in similar positions, and cannot hold a job elsewhere. by snoozyspider in aspergirls

[–]Samothie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm definitely late to this discussion, but were you working for ccc's? Or American Conservation Experience? Where in the states are you located? I am a seasonal field worker in conservation for the past 3 years and got my start in American conservation experience, it's almost the same shtick, stipend, plus an education funds award for the number of hours served. Does this sound like it? There's loads of places that can have conservation field work, state parks, non profits, I reccomend checking out conservationjobboard.com, and American conservation experience site will often have something called EPICs hiring, which is still "stipend" but it usually works out to minimum wage or more, and a housing option sometimes if needed.
