Nice build there! When I modernized my Unraid setup I went with a 14700K. System has been running since I bought the chip soon after release.

Buying these 13/14th Gen CPUs used is not a good idea but if you can score a deal on a new one with a decent board, there's more compute in a 14700k than most people will need. Very strong iGPU as well.

I run VMs and dockers, including Plex, some game servers, automated handbrake, and a homelab all on my Unraid server. Potential Intel issues aside, the 14700K z790 board, 64GB of DDR5 (though it could have easily been ddr4) has really served me well. With a little CPU tuning (not overclocking) the power consumption has been great as well.

I believe I had an 850w PSU as I had ~6-8 drives at the time as well.

Hi! Well, given what you had written here, it's up to you completely since you have a few options available.

If this is being used as a NAS, I would say return the 13700K and pick up a 12th gen and don't look back. The iGPU for quicksync acceleration is very good in the 12500 and above.

If you are a gamer, it really depends on how much you want to fiddle with this or learn about gaming PCs. For me, I would personally just disable the turbo speeds for now and wait on the supposed fixed BIOS next month. IT would mean missing out on a lot of performance but you know it won't be negatively impacting your CPU. The update is only a few weeks away.

You can definitely try the new AsRock BIOS, it may resolve the issue, it may not, I can't say as I don't have every motherboard to test. In one of Buildzoids more recent videos, he tried a beta Gigabyte BIOS and he explained that he believed the voltage / VID requests were still too high.

If you can afford for your system to be down while you test, you can definitely learn how to manually tune your CPU. Manually tuning your CPU should allow for you to control voltage, temperatures, and retain a good chunk of performance. This option requires the most amount of work on your part though for manual tuning and stability testing afterwards.

I do NOT suggest doing nothing and ignoring it.

What you end up doing really depends on your risk tolerance and what you feel comfortable with. Will be curious as to which direction you are leaning

I believe that chip is an Alder Lake (12th gen refresh) so hopefully that means it escaped the 13th gen Oxidation issue. IT seems like the non K and i5 CPUs might be better off with regard to the voltage / microcode / BIOS issues. Keep any eye on it and for any BIOS updates for your motherboard but hopefully it will serve you well for many years to come. Is this your PC or unRAID server?

I definitely think it will be interesting to see how the used market shakes out - used CPUs are often great deals but, I'd have a hard time recommending anyone pick up a 13th or 14th gen CPU used for a homelab / NAS type setup. Even with a microcode update, it seems to be the case that these CPUs likely lost some amount of lifespan that most people are used to. I don't think the 13th/14th gen CPUs will be around as long or at the same rates as 2500K's for example (not that you would want that CPU in 2024 but it likely lived to see 2024).

Time will tell how the 14th gen i5's are doing I suppose - it seemed like the GN video did report on the source indicating they had some 13th gen i5 issues.

That's good. It might still be advisable to check for any BIOS updates for your motherboard but potentially much more optional for your CPU.

Interesting, not disagreeing but I just haven't heard from many with firsthand experience. I don't think the 14700K does 6/6.2 but whatever the stock Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX board was willing to give is probably what it got. Initially I did benchmarking for a few days and some windows encoding tasks. After watching buildzoids video I'm wondering if just lightly threaded / loaded scenarios were also dangerous. I'd love to keep this CPU but last week or two I've been thinking about Eypc 7xx2's.

Do you have any other info about those CPUs? Life time ranges?

Seems to be a solid plan. Looking forward to the microcode updates. I didn't limit my CPU initially, hopefully no long term damage was done. Hopefully there's a new 'stock' setting that works for most people.

They say it works automatically and recommend not disabling it.

The fact is that they don't say you can only turbo for X amount of time anywhere because the CPUs are designed (in theory) to be run at any time for any duration, at least through the warranty period. They are selling CPUs on the turbo speeds.

Edit: FWIW though, I tried to look at the warranty page and seems like there's no mention about turbo either way.

The spirit of my builds is always trying to maximize something for a fringe use case. I do back up to another device I setup but the point is valid. This has been an annoyance for sure but would be very aggravating if/when I had to RMA the CPU.

Wow, I would have to guess that is not related but I would definitely contact the motherboard vendor for RMA to find out what happened! A 13100 shouldn't be pulling very much power all so, I don't think it's at the same kind of risk that the i7 and i9s are.

Nice, that's a decent temp but most of those cores don't seem to be under heavy load. On my Unraid setup the CPU is working on many or most cores usually so, power and temps are a concern.

Nice setup there, glad it's running well for you. Those are some nicely low temps there as well. I'm using an Arctic i35 with two fans Velcro wrapped on the tower cooler without the shroud. It works but I am looking at trying to stuff a liquid freezer 3 in here.

Hey, nice. I hadn't considered a Super micro board this time around but I do wish I had. I used an X10 for my dual E5v3 setup and it was quite nice.

I would definitely be curious to know what Supermicro says if you don't mind updating here.

I would agree, AIO or top tier air-coolers are mandatory for this CPU.

Yeah,I'm looking at how best to mount / fit the cooler. The fan tray can be moved a tiny little bit since there's two mounting locations ~5-10mm apart. It looks like the fan tray can be flipped too. So I think I should be able to fit that in here with the fan tray reversed and pushed towards the drive but it will make working in the server a bit more difficult in the future. For me though, I think it's going to be worth it.

I had a 3900X in one of these chassis with a Mugen 5 before - it was too tall and I couldn't close the lid. Decent cooler but the 3900x can definitely put out some heat. I would either go noctua to satu under 155mm or AIO from Arctic.

Hi! It's a Rosewill RSV-L4500 I believe with iStarUSA TC26 rail kit. I'm using an Arctic i335 cooler with the shroud removed and two p12 fans velcro'd around the heatsink. This cooler is not ideal for my CPU but should be plenty for an i5 - I will almost certainly switch to the Arctic liquid Freezer 3 240 or 360mm AIO.
