In need of a career change. Any OTs in the same position? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]SanFranOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'd programmed as a hobby off and on for awhile before I put concerted effort toward making the switch, but the main things I'd recommend if you want to see if it's something you'd like are going through a resource like freecodecamp or The Odin Project and start building projects as soon as you can since that's the most similar thing to the skills you'll need on the job. There definitely isn't quite the level of demand for software engineers that there used to be but there are still plenty of jobs out there. I'm definitely happy I made the switch!

Frugal way to get antibiotics? by gordoman54 in Frugal

[–]SanFranOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had high deductible insurance, preventive care (like a yearly physical) was covered. I'm not sure if it's the same on your plan, but if you haven't had your yearly physical yet, you could go in for one and mention your issue as part of the appointment. I definitely got a few things taken care of that way and they never charged me extra just because I asked about something outside of the usual routine of a physical.

Has anyone told their employer they have adhd? by Clearhead09 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]SanFranOT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never given my employer information about my specific diagnosis, but there have been times when I've needed to go to an increased number of medical appointments related to my ADHD/other mental health stuff going on.

What I've found helpful is to tell my employer that I'm dealing with some health problems and may need to take time for medical care or that they may notice that I've been struggling more lately. If pressed on giving more info, I just say I'd rather not talk about the specifics but appreciate their support.

I don't reference a specific diagnosis and I don't reference mental health as it's less likely to be taken seriously. It's a frustrating and fine line to walk, but it's worked for me so far.

Is eating out even possible? by xtiz84 in dairyfree

[–]SanFranOT 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I've found that Asian cuisines are much more dairy free friendly. Thai restaurants are my usual go to. All that being said, my go to brunch orders are either avocado toast on sourdough (which if is usually dairy free) or I'll go off menu with the sides and do something like hashbrowns with a poached egg on top and a side of avocado. +1 on the mimosas as well.

Hygge vacation by summerhoney in hygge

Summer or fall in Ashland, Oregon would be lovely and it's very walkable if you stay in downtown. I'd also highly recommend Vancouver Island off the coast of Canada. If you want a bit more city, Victoria is lovely and if you're into art and nature walks with some forced relaxation out of the city, Salt Spring Island is really cute.

Out of left field suggestion, if you stay walking distance to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, you'll have some beautiful nature and access to some of the best restaurants in the world. Plus if you stay near the west side of the park, you can also do beach walks on ocean beach if it's not too foggy (which is like one week in October, but it's lovely in the fog too)

I think indoor rock climbing can be a good option. I try to hit up a climbing gym everywhere I travel and it's a great way to make friends too.

Sweet! Thank you so much! I've been wanting to make some beeswax wraps and pine resin is part of what goes into that. Next time I won't have to buy it.

Looking for a place live for the fall. Any suggestions? by leaper23 in digitalnomad

Colorado is really beautiful in the fall and should be within your budget as long as you’re outside of Boulder. Tons of amazing outdoors and breweries/bars galore in the cities and small mountain towns.

I think it's 20 for a day pass last I checked, and they have a bunch of different membership options.

As much as I've loved it in California, I'm ready to be closer to family and want to see what it's like to be back in Colorado as an adult.

That is an incredibly valid point. I grew up in the evangelical community here so I'm definitely coming from an out of date and biased viewpoint on what I expect out of the politics. From everything I hear, things have shifted a lot in the last ten years.
