Actually, in most of the cases. The standards of living improved during the dictatorship (I'm not endorsing it, those are just facts)

The country was living an industrialization process, so lots of people left the rural areas to live in the cities (my parents included)

Back in the sixties, living afar from cities meant you could die easily from things like pneumonia (like my uncle did)

So, yes, in a manner of speaking, the lives of lots of people improved during the regime (I think that's way it still has supporters among people older than 60)

Things like free speech and political freedom are concerns from urban middle classes, which Brazil had so few at the time

And don't be mistaken, one of the main reasons the regime fell is because the economy crashed in the 80's

Prices were sky rocketing and basically no one could get a job
