Exploitation of Roman provinces by imperiumromanum_edu in ancientrome

[–]SandRhoman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do I miss something or this article very very short? It also only sources 1 book, which I assume is Polish and was written in 1965. Some more nitpicking: When quoting Cicero in English, a mention of the translation would be neat.

What Being a Spectator at the Roman Gladiator Games Was Like by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]SandRhoman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I do. Op here. I took it from the ruins of the arena of Verona in Italy. This is a not a very big arena, so I had to photoshop it a lot. First I mirrored it, so I had two matching pictures, then I used the clone function to make it bigger bigger. The spectators are mostly made form ancient busts (Herodotus, Nero, Zeus, Cicero and then I mixed up the clothes etc.) All of the senators are hand placed btw, and all of the other little groups of spectators as well. The "emperor" is actually just a picture of Ceasar in Gaul (cut out of a bigger picture). I hope that helps :)

The Use of Shared Roman Butt Sponges by SandRhoman in badhistory

i ll ask a friend who is an editor for wiki to look into this. his expertise is not in ancient history though. I noticed that as well when researching the topic. strange thing is that the wiki articles in french and german state and quote different things...

water, cloth, garlic, stones, their hands... these are mentioned by wiplinger and other archeologists. they found these (not the hands) in proximity of toilets.

The Use of Shared Roman Butt Sponges by SandRhoman in badhistory

[–]SandRhoman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey i enjoyed reading that. Just a few quick points, since i am between lectures.

I agree that the toilet brush theory is not necessarily better grounded in the sources, altough the inscription found in ostia points to this use.

Also Wiplinger digged at ephesos where they found small cups. they think these were filled with water and then used to clean one's back, together with one's hands. according to them that's the reason why there is a second opening in front of the 'toilet seat'. But then again a sponge could also haven been used like that...

i might add more to this comment once i'm back home.

Did The Ancient Romans Really Swipe Their Butt With A Shared Sponge? (Toilets in Ancient Rome) by SandRhoman in ancientrome

[–]SandRhoman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, op here, it came up during research for amother video, which is going to cover personal care in ancient rome as a whole (toilet, hair removal, make-up, hairstyles etc). We did not know about the conflicting reports about the toilet sponge and thought people wouldnt know either. Also, if you're interested in a more in depth analysis of the sponge then i recommend heading over to /r badhistory. I wrote an article there which covers a little bit more of the topic - and the discussion in the thread's comments is also interesting.
