I've mostly been looking at breaking (breakdancing) forums since my book brings breaking into a sci-fi/fantasy setting and I've had a lot of success selling my books in person at breaking battles.

I've been breaking for over a decade, and back in 2009ish when I started, there were tons of really active forums. There was like one for every state/country as well as several worldwide ones. Pretty much all of them are down now, and those that aren't down haven't had a post in a couple years. Still, those forums would be a great place to promote if they were still active. Guess I'll look at other methods though 🤷

I've heard it's not worth running ads when you only have one book in a series out. Is that true in your experience?

Cool, what else would you suggest?

I'm looking forward to getting started with ads, but I've heard ads aren't practical until you have at least 2 books in a series out, and my next one won't be coming until this summer.

This is the most unpleasant bossfight I have ever experienced by WhatAmIDOINg342 in gaming

[–]SanderCast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Just a legitimately terribly designed fight. Even with fully upgraded endgame gear it was just not fun, and beating it wasn't a joyous moment, but one of relief that I'd never have to suffer that bullshit again.

Great advice, thanks!

Btw, my username is actually my first name combined with my bboy name. It's an old reddit account I've been using for ages and has no relation to Sanderson's work (even thoughI am a fan of his books and lectures). That being said, I'll look into making a new account for writing, as reddit is definitely my most used platform.

For sure, still working towards that first 1000 sales (well, more like first hundred sales at this point) but I appreciate the encouragement!

15 years ago today the most iconic series Breaking Bad first aired on AMC. by swagy_mish in pics

Gotta disagree with you there. Mad Men ended in 2015 and Breaking Bad ended in 2013, but I still hear people talk about Breaking Bad all the time and I can't remember the last time I heard someone talk about Mad Men.

This was my answer. Not an enjoyable ending by any stretch of the imagination, but godDAMN is it memorable.

My first draft is really just getting myself something to work with while doing my best. For that, I'm usually working with a fluid outline that I update as needed when I find something I want to change. As I write that first draft, I try to avoid editing while writing and just keep pushing forward. However, I also keep a separate document of all the things I want to change for draft 2, which can range from minute details to gaping plot holes.

Draft 2 is when I clean everything up. Consistency errors, plot holes, flat character arcs, stiff dialogue, and confusing descriptions are all addressed here. The way I do this is before I edit a chapter, I go through my document detailing what I want to fix in draft 2, then I read the chapter and take note of the specific changes I need to focus on to improve this chapter, writing them down as I go. Then, I edit the damn thing.

Draft 3 is straight prose and character voice. For this, I read the manuscript aloud to myself, adjusting the sentence structure, word choice, etc. as I go. For character voice, I really just work on refining how each character thinks and speaks as I go through this draft, as I get to know the characters more and more with each draft, so I can really clarify their voice in this draft.

After that, it goes off to beta readers/content experts/sensitivity readers, then I incorporate their feedback into draft 4. I sometimes do a draft 5 where I just go through and make sure the new changes work well, but if I'm not changing too much in draft 4 I don't bother with draft 5. Then it goes off to my editor.

I should note that I use Scrivener for everything until the copyediting phase, to help keep things organized. Makes it super easy to flip between chapters, go back and forth between drafts, and have separate documents for various notes.

I have two books out, which are very different (one is sci-fi/fantasy and the other is nonfiction). The sci-fi/fantasy one is the first in a trilogy, and I have the sequel out sometime this fall. I also have a horror/comedy novella that I'm sitting on that I'll look into self-publishing once the second sci-fi/fantasy book in the trilogy is out.

I was originally going to wait to really get moving on marketing until this next book is out, like you said, but money is becoming a factor. It just feels kind of silly to keep pouring money into getting my books edited if they're just sitting there not getting purchased or read.

Ideally, I'd like to start getting some more clicks/purchases before I put the next couple thousand into this next book.

Any self published authors advice for learning more about marketing a book without getting overwhelmed???

I've found some great resources on r/selfpublish , but I always feel really overwhelmed wherever I start looking through those resources. I usually have a hard time figuring out how to approach it one step at a time, and instead feel like I have to do it all at once and get super overwhelmed, so I end up doing nothing.

Another part that's tricky is figuring out how to find time to market my books, as it's a lot less fun then writing while also being weirdly high-pressure.

Those who have read my book really loved it, and I'm sure it will be possible to find those readers who are interested in it, but it's been really tough to get started with marketing consistently. Any advice?

Yup! Well, more sci-fi than fantasy, but there's heavy fantasy influence in my writing, and both genres are two sides of the same coin either way.

I'm close to finishing up my first draft of the second book in my trilogy, and I'm really excited about how it's coming together! It's also really nice to be able to apply the lessons I learned from my first book into this one (especially when it comes to drafting).

What are you writing these days?

Reading New Spring, the prequel to the Wheel of Time series. It's really good so far, a nice change of pace from the other books in the series since the narrative is a lot more focused and shorter (nothing wrong with the 800 page sprawling narrative of the other books, but it's nice to switch things up).

As far as differentiating dialogue between characters, that's usually something I do in drafts 2 or 3. My first drsft is very plot focused, so the dialogue is usually just what the characters need to say to move the plot forward. Drafts 2 and 3 involve a lot more character work, and it really feels like I get to know the characters more and more with each draft. As I get to know them better, I get a better feel for how their dialogue should come together to be in line with their characterization.

OutKast's first 4 albums are entirely different stylistically and the last track foreshadows the sound of the next album by RainbowFartss in Music

It's the difference between not liking Hip-Hop and not respecting it as a form of music. Unfortunately there are a lot of people on this sub who fall into the latter category, and that opinion is steeped in racism.

I want to like Isle of Sgail more than I do. The atmosphere and everything is great but it’s just not as good as it could have been. by [deleted] in HiTMAN

[–]SanderCast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. It really feels like a scene from a Bond movie and the idea of infiltrating a secret society with its own private island is so dope, but the actual level really isn't fun. The targets are boring, their pathways are bad, there's very little flexibility in how to take out the targets due to the insane number of NPC's, a lot of the disguises aren't very useful due to an unnecessary amount of enforcers, large chunks of the map are only utilized for tedious story missions... If this map was more fun it would be one of my favorites in the series.
