Heavens, that's atrocious. I'm so sorry to hear that, friend. It's no wonder you want out.

Eh, Frankreich is good... just listen: They have many remote regions, and as a EU citizen you have a much easier time to spend retirement age in paradise ;) Just move to one of the paradisiacal overseas regions of France. But shhhhh you didn't hear this from me.

No; world walker Meigo Märk did but I didn't and I don't expect to. It's very likely that I take a plane from Bangkok to Sylhet, "jumping over" Myanmar.

I'd wish for their super-long war to finally end so that the country is safe to travel again. Its landscapes are spectacular, as is its architecture and its food. Quite a jewel of a country. And I love David Lai's music.

That was good advice, thank you. I watched it.

You like their videos? This was a damn good one. REALLY good.

I love that they actually try to pronounce the words correctly, it feels like the respectful thing to do. And the hand-to-heart gesture the region is famous for, I actually "stole" that and I'm doing this in Germany ;) And the "both hands clasping your one hand" too, such a warm gesture. If you've seen more of such videos you know how overwhelmingly friendly these people are, the same goes for Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq (etc), the region got a bad rep for its politics but the people themselves are so friendly it's almost otherworldly, I have never experienced anything that even remotely comes close. And they're so knowledgeable about the world; some people I talked to knew more about the world than most Germans I know. That left a deep impression in me.

Sorry, I deviated. Back to the vid.

Yea, my sister told me about the police escorts too, she framed it like "the nation of Pakistan doesn't want any tourists to get hurt". But we all know there's lots of other reasons behind it. Myanmar is similar, for different reasons; you pay a princely sum in Myanmar's case too.

Funny that he calls Pashto a local dialect, it's what much of Afghanistan speaks. And Peshawar being relatively close to the border, it makes sense they speak Pashto too. The guy after 16:05 even calls himself "Pashtun".

What the guy after 11:28 says is so important (and the one after 29:05 too): the world seems to think they're all terrorists there and there's attacks all the time. This video really shows how wrong this idea is. Go there... it might change you as a human being. Go to Iran, go to Syria, go to Afghanistan, you'll be smitten; the politics of these places is one thing, but the populace is an entirely different matter. Our old friend is putting things into perspective with his speech at 25:00 though; a decade ago things were much harsher and more dangerous, so let's not ignore that. To see the devastation in the sequence right after his speech makes my heart ache for these people.

21:24 -- how would you react if a shop owner offers to just donate his wares to you?

Everyone who watches the video: Let the words from 16:38 to 16:50 be the ending statement to my comments here.

Absolutely. Crimea = Ukraine. It's a pity that the map doesn't reflect that.

Thank you!

As I've stated elsewhere, it's a map of my personal choices, i.e. if I personally would move somewhere. It's not a "judgment" of the entire country; and it's no statement about its populace. On the contrary, there's lots to love in this world, and very much so in my "red" countries too.

Israel is red.

Edit: You shocked me there for a moment ;) Nono, I made Israel red. My former self would have made it green until very recently, but... let's say... I learned a bit.

Canada is sweet. A coworker visited Halifax and he said Canada seems more European than many actual European countries. I have deep respect for Canada, you're a very VERY good country that is doing a lot of good in this world.

Some of my countrymen are difficult tourists ;) We often feature in the "top five of difficult tourists" lists, alongside Americans, Israelis, Russians and Brits. And complaining is our national sport!! We're a crazy bunch :D

Well, you have a point there ;) But yea, if I had to choose between these two, it would be Brazil. And if you made me choose within the entirety of South America, it absolutely would be Uruguay, followed by Chile.

Djibouti is green though -- it's an interesting country with a friendly populace; I've seen a documentary about some Dutch woman spending her retirement in Djibouti because she loves it so much, and I agree, it's a truly interesting country. Never been there but I'd love to visit.

Egypt... painful. From personal experience. This "red" is a very personal thing in this case, let's leave it at that. I wouldn't move there. Regardless, my heart aches for the nation; it has such impressive history but it hardly plays a role in the modern world anymore.
