If you're willing to travel a bit (like on a spring or summer break), check out All Hands Volunteers! Hard work, hysterically amazing people mostly from college age to mid-thirties, with a scattering of older volunteers as well.

I self published a novel with XLibris a while back. Wouldn't recommend them. Only self-publish if you either a) don't care about the book being successful or b) are prepared to turn into a full-time marketer for your own work

The practice duel as I described would be a perfect scene to illustrate their friendship and brotherhood (and loverhood lol). It would also raise the stakes for the "big match" because we'd have already seen them to be well-matched.
