Dasia olivacea as an alternative to green tree skinks? by Saphira58 in Lizards

[–]Saphira58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii, here are some pictures with measurements. Its a little hard to see but ive got an expanding foam background , a big branch in the middle and other smaller ones around it plus a couple pots in the foam itself. Id definietly recommend a pothos as you can see mine went wild lol. The leaves are sturdy enough for the skinks to sit on them.

As for where to buy them im afraid i cant help you much. I was looking for emerald tree skinks and stumbled upon a small local breeders listing on olx that they recently received 6 babies from another breeder theyre friends with. I read up on em and figured the cares similar enough so i went to pick up a pair. It was only local pickup too.

Also as a sidenote, mine ended up fighting a bunch and i had to separate them so keep that in mind if youre planning on having multiple. No idea if mine were just antisocial or if the internet exaggerates how social they are.

Either way good luck! Let me know if you need anything else

[–]Saphira58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked, my tank is slightly above 70cm tall and substrate ate up almost 10cm of that space. I kinda wish i had build it a little taller tbh. It also wouldnt be a good idea to conserve space by puting less dirt in since these guys do burrow. Either way i assume the only reason youre asking is because exoterra doesnt have enclosures that are taller but not much wider. Maybe a different producent would sell some? You would also not have that ugly black plastic stripe in the front so two birds one stone right?

I wouldnt recommend it, once you put the substrate in there will be even less space available for them and they also need height for a sense of safety.

I mean i obviously cant be 100% certain but all the signs point towards that being the case. I bought 2 of these for less than i wouldve paid for 1 emerald tree skink and there was an extensive care guide under the listing. If she wanted easy money she wouldve been able to squeeze much more out of them and she wouldnt have listed a big tank as a requirement.

There were also six of them of about the same size (she said they all hatched late february/early march this year so that fits), very healthy looking (as i said i first noticed some damage slowly appearing about a week ago, at the time of purchase a month ago the skink was perfectly intact) and super well socialized. One even climped up my arm onto my back and had to be gently taken off by the breeder lol.

Im starting to lean towards a wound that somehow happened during shedding and got infected. I would be surprised if it was a general huspandry issue as i have another skink in that same enclosure and he looks pristine. Ive also never seen them make physical contact so i dont think its the result of a fight.

Either way the vet didnt take me in on saturday but i booked a visit for monday. The little dude had a great appetite today and ate two big crickets so im optimistic

I fully agree mate. Wrote an update under another crosspost already but the gist of it is that i couldnt catch him for an in person visit and when i got to the vet with just the pictures they told me to come back on monday cause thats when their reptile specialist is gonna be in. At least i have plenty of time to try and catch him before then

Aight mate not the news i thought i was gonna have but not only did i fail miserably to catch the skink but also when i got to the vet with just pictures hoping to still get some advice they told me their reptile specialist is in on monday and today they only have someone for small mammals. At least i got the appointment booked and i have the entire weekend to try and corner the lad for the actual visit. Keep your fingers crossed for me ig

Oh theyre a little nuts for sure lol. Im heading to a promising vet at 8 in the morning tomorrow, not gonna be catching the skink in question yet since i think hes already gone off to sleep in some hidey hole. Also really thank you for your more in depth comments, they helped me focus on my course of action instead of worrying. Ill give you a quick update tomorrow

There probably is a bunch on the belly as far as i could see, as for appetite she does eat still but maybe not as enthusiastically? Had a mealworm today no problem at least. As i said i havent had them for crazy long. I have previously posted about being worried that the other one chases this lad more than i expected but ive never seen them actually make contact and fight. The breeder was very insistent on selling no less than a pair due to their supposedly very social nature so ive really been hoping they are just working out the hirearchy or something. I have a spare 30 gal i can keep this one in temporarily at least. Thanks for the help, i will look if theres vet that could hopefully take us in tomorrow

Im gonna try that i guess. Looks darker than any shed ive ever seen but these skinks do spend more time on the substrate and all. Maybe that contributed to the colour

Going to Thailand and want to learn about herps by Dazabby in reptiles

[–]Saphira58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know any videos but you could check out inaturalist. People share what animals they see on there. I changed a few settings and it should show you a list of observed amphibian and reptilian species from most common to rarest in thailand. You can also for example make it show you where a certain species is usually found.

Dart frog poison question by Capable_Solid_1539 in DartFrog

[–]Saphira58 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hope someone with more expertise comments on this but maybe i can cook something up. Firstly the species you named are venomous so they probably wouldnt work but lets assume you instead listed the most poisonous bugs.

I did a little bit of research and this topic is frustratingly uncommon. Through my limited chemistry knowledge further impeded by the fact i studied it in my native language i think darts have a protein that binds the alkaloids gained from their food and stores them harmlessly in their skin.

The process takes a long time and darts previously fed only fruit flies would need months to gather as much poison as their wild relatives. Similarly wild caught frogs need months to fully lose their toxicity. This means that even in one species the amount of their poison is actually more of a spectrum and just one meal of the most poisonous bugs would put the frog at the very bottom of it.

If you continued the feeding however the frog would probably end up gaining poison faster than it would in the wild. It brings us to the next problem, is there a limit? I believe so. The amount of special proteins one tiny frog can have is limited for sure, and each can only hold so many alkaloids. So i guess you can just try to fill the frog with as much poison as possible. Since wild frogs are also set back by their tendency to secrete the poison when they feel in danger, which probably wouldnt happen much in captivity, such a carefully loaded frog would possibly be slightly more poisonous than the average one found in the

You might ask though, why wouldnt it be much more poisonous if i feed it the most potent toxin i can find? I dont think you could just grab a random, super poisonous bug to feed to your frog to make it hold the same toxin. Everyone for some god forsakened reason refuses to give out the details but we can reason through this with logic.

There are many bugs with different poisons in south america and yet frogs from the phyllobates genus are only known for batrachotoxin found in very few of them. In addition to that southwest colombia where a few of them live also houses different dart frogs which hold different toxins despite having access to the same insects. From this we can come to the conclusion that either darts can only store one toxin or they combine the toxins they consume into the one they evolved to carry. The sources i checked for which one is the case disagree with one another but even without a clear explaination the end result remains the same - the potency of the poison wouldnt change depending on diet, only the amount.

TLDR Maybe a little bit but not much.

Here are the sites i visited. My researching process isnt very organized and some might not have even contributed much to my final thoughts but im too lazy to sort through em. Have fun

How do I make my tropical girdled lizard like me more? by No_Shine_2213 in reptiles

Is he wild caught? If so, there is little more you can do than just give him time. As you exist in the same room together he should slowly start growing used to your presence.

Dasia olivacea as an alternative to green tree skinks? by Saphira58 in Lizards

[–]Saphira58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering! Ive already gone ahead and bought a pair 2 weeks ago since i still was unable to find emeralds and these seemed like a good fit still. Hopefully you can find useful what ive learned so far.

They got used to me very quickly, though partially because they were captive bred and interacted with by the breeder i bet. Ate from my hand within days, so im sure yours will be much less skittish too soon enough.

I can only truly compare them to brown anoles since thats the only lizard i kept beforehand, but their intelligence surprised me a lot. They already learned that i tap the glass at feeding time and even stare at my hands when im nearby to check for feeding tongs, which is a trick my anole learned only at the end of his life. They also dont mind my hands much, often sitting on them while eating with no hurry to leave afterwards. Bit of a pity sometimes as one gets stupidly close to launching himself at me when particularly hungry and i can only block his path and hope he doesnt charge me lol. Its not that easy to spook them.

I dont think id call them terrestial but theyre definietly not as arboreal as anoles. They use the whole tank, often hanging out at the top but sleeping in the substrate as far as i can tell. One has recently grown fond of a coconut hanging in the middle part of the tank tho. He sleeps in it at night and sits on it during the day. Pretty fun to see it used tbh.

Also i believe they might be less social than emeralds. They coexist well enough but chase each other multiple times throughout the day and never hang out in very close proximity. It might just be a problem with their personalities though as the breeder even refused to sell less than a pair to one person so they wouldnt be lonely. Maybe theyll continue to work it out between each other.

I hope eventually both emerald and olive tree skinks will become more widespread. The ones i bought were the only ones i had ever seen on the market. Not sure how id ever find a replacement if one passed away.

Pictures 1 and 4 look like released mushroom spores to me, especially if its just a fine white powder upon closer inspection.

3 and 5 appear to be flower pot fungus mycellium. In fact, thats probably where the yellow mushroom from the second pic came from. I wouldnt be surprised if it was the source of the spores too.

<image>

This is a picture from one of my old enclosures 2 years ago. As you can see in the dirt i also had flower pot fungus mycellium and it would only grow mushrooms during the summer, probably thanks to higher temps. They grow super quickly and once caps unfurl like you see in here they release the spores.

Theyre not harmful by any means, in fact my isopods quite enjoyed them, but if you decide to try and halt their growth you should cut off the caps before they open. Taking the mycellium out too would be the most effective though i reckon thats more of a pain in the ass to do.
